At a glance

  • First coordinate your flights, trains, and ferry connections via Wakkanai, and account for possible cancellations in your schedule.
  • Climbing Mount Rishiri requires fitness and gear, so also plan alternatives such as an island tour, viewpoints, and coastal walks.
  • Lodging options are limited in peak season, so check ferry service and accommodations together.
  • Climbing Mount Rishiri is not the same level of activity as sightseeing around the island. A summit attempt requires a separate plan for a long hike, mountaineering gear, and trail conservation rules.
  • Options for sightseeing on day two include the lake and Mount Rishiri views at Otatomari Marsh and the forest path at Himenuma Pond. These are separate from a walk near Oshidomari Port, so choose your order based on your reserved vehicle or sightseeing transport. Don’t make a summit climb and visits to both lakes mandatory on the same day.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1

Take your booked ferry to Oshidomari and confirm your lodging pickup. After dropping off your bags, if the wind and your energy allow, walk the official path to the Peshi Cape lookout beside the port and back. If you arrive late or winds are strong, stick to the port area and a meal in town.

Day 2

If the weather is suitable, visit viewpoints and the coast using your booked island transport. Only those separately prepared for a Mount Rishiri climb should set out before dawn.

Day 3

Head to the port well before your return sailing. If it is canceled, first arrange an extended stay and changes to your flight or train connections.

How to fit it in

Choose this destination when you have time to travel to northern Hokkaido and want to see both island and mountain scenery. It is not a destination to squeeze into a short Sapporo trip.

Reality check

Transport

Match your ferry destination to your lodging location; first confirm whether you need Oshidomari Port (鴛泊). For a nearby viewpoint on your first day, consider Peshi Cape. The official Rishirifuji Town hiking map lists 1.0 km and 30 minutes from the port to the lookout. That time does not cover a full day’s outing, so allow extra time to return the same way and rest. If you tour the island by bus, check the actual Soya Bus timetable for the nearest stop to your lodging, the next departure, and the return to the port. Don’t plan to walk a loop between the viewpoints.

Time

This does not fit a short round trip from Sapporo. Plan for at least 2 nights and allow extra time in case ferries are canceled.

Cost

Budget separately for transport to Wakkanai, round-trip ferries, island lodging, and a rental car or bicycle. Set aside money for an extra night if a ferry is canceled.

Safety

Climbing Mount Rishiri is not a casual walk. If you aren’t planning a climb, focus on viewpoints and coastal paths, and check offshore weather alerts.

If plans change

Ferry canceled

Change your next flight or train reservation first, then arrange an extended stay or lodging in Wakkanai and wait for the operator’s instructions.

When Mount Rishiri is covered by clouds

Don’t press ahead with a climb or viewpoint visit just to check it off. Take your time on officially open coastal, wetland, and village routes.

Small tip

Your return ferry may be canceled, so don’t book a flight or accommodation immediately after leaving the island if it would be difficult to get a refund.

Final check before departure

  • Check the cancellation and pickup terms for ferries, flights, and lodging.
  • Allow at least half a day of connection time after your return.
  • Decide separately whether you’ll climb, and prepare gear suitable for coastal and mountain weather.

Ferry and flight services to Rishiri Island can be canceled because of offshore winds, and lodging pickup schedules vary by ferry sailing or flight. Check your return connections and service status first.
