At a glance
- These eight places are options to choose from based on your departure city and time off, not one route to cover all at once. Pick one place or region.
- If you have just one day away from Tokyo, consider Okutama first. If you can stay overnight, Kusatsu or Kamikochi are better choices, with arrival and return times planned around your accommodation.
- Utsukushigahara and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route are separate highland and mountain transport destinations. Even if you base yourself in Matsumoto or Nagano, don’t try to fit both into the same itinerary. Check official service and opening information, then choose one.
- Choose Oirase Gorge as a separate trip within Aomori, and Furano–Biei or Rishiri Island as separate trips within Hokkaido. Rishiri in particular involves flights or ferries and travel around the island, so it is not presented as a three-night, four-day trip combined with Furano–Biei.
- If rain or fog is forecast, shorten your viewpoint and walking time, and keep a hot spring town or city accommodation as a backup. Recheck operator updates for mountain transport and island ferries shortly before departure.
- Check availability for Kamikochi mountain lodges and hot spring accommodations, and flights or ferries to Rishiri, before planning sightseeing. Don’t compare a day trip near Tokyo with an overnight trip to a northern island using the same cost and cancellation assumptions.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Choose only Okutama. Pick no more than two activities from streams, caves, and hot springs, then return to Tokyo the same day.
Arrive in Kusatsu → visit the Yubatake area and enjoy the hot springs → take one walk the next day, then head back.
From Matsumoto, choose either Kamikochi or Utsukushigahara. For the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, first choose your direction of travel: Tateyama Station on the Toyama side or Ogizawa on the Nagano side. Make it a separate round trip timed to the official mountain transport schedule.
Choose one region: Oirase Gorge in Aomori, or Furano–Biei or Rishiri Island in Hokkaido.

For a Japanese summer getaway, check how easy it is to get there before choosing by a “cool-sounding” name. For a short trip from Tokyo, choose Okutama or Kusatsu; for mountain scenery, choose Kamikochi, Tateyama, or Utsukushigahara; if you have more time up north, choose Oirase, Furano–Biei, or Rishiri Island.
Reality check
Many places connect by train and bus from major cities such as Tokyo, Nagoya, Nagano, and Sapporo. Check the last train and bus departures and transfer wait times first.
Focus on how much time you can spend there during the coolest hours, rather than whether it is possible as a day trip. Getting to mountain and island destinations can take half a day.
Calculate transit passes, mountain transport, accommodation, hot springs, and admission fees separately. Check peak-season accommodation and rental car prices early.
Even in summer, highlands can bring rain, fog, low temperatures, and strong winds. For streamside, gorge, and mountain walks, prepare for slippery paths and sudden weather changes.
If plans change
Choose only Okutama, travel there and back by train and bus, and save mountain overnight stays for another trip.
Focus on Furano–Biei. Plan Rishiri Island as a separate trip only if you can allow extra time for possible ferry cancellations.
Small tip
Even in summer, rain in the mountains can make it feel much colder quickly. A light jacket, waterproof shoes, and saved bus schedules matter more than on a city trip.
Final check before departure
- Check the first and last train and bus departures, or flight and ferry schedules, for your actual travel dates from your departure city to each option.
- For mountain and island options, secure accommodation and transport first, and choose a city to stay in if services are suspended.
- On days with rain or fog in the forecast, keep a hot spring or museum as an alternative to a viewpoint-focused destination.
For all eight places, you can check access and seasonal information on the regional tourism and operator pages linked in this article. Mountain transport and island ferries can be affected by the weather, so check each operator’s latest updates shortly before departure.
