At a glance
- The full route is Seoul → Sokcho, 2 nights → Gangneung, 2 nights → Uljin, 1 night → Gyeongju, 2 nights → Busan, 3 nights → Tongyeong, 1 night → Namhae, 1 night → Suncheon, 2 nights → Mokpo, 2 nights → Jeonju, 2 nights → via Buyeo → Gongju, 1 night → Taean, 1 night → return to Seoul. That totals 20 nights, with no additional overnight stay on Day 21.
- Head south along the East Coast, travel west along the South Coast, then turn north from Mokpo. Stay multiple nights in Sokcho, Gangneung, Gyeongju, Suncheon, Mokpo, and Jeonju to avoid packing every day. Use the third day in Busan for laundry and rest so you feel less tired on the next leg.
- This baseline itinerary has no set travel month, so it does not depend on cherry blossoms, fall foliage, swimming, or particular seasonal foods. Hikes to Seoraksan's summit, island ferries, and mountain cable cars are also left out. If you want to include one of these experiences, remove another activity that day and set aside time for it.
- On days when you change cities, explore just one area at your destination. Avoid adding stop after stop on the drives from Uljin to Gyeongju, Busan to Tongyeong, and Mokpo to Jeonju. Check driving directions in your map app again on the day of departure, and cut afternoon sightseeing first if traffic causes long delays.
- When comparing lodging, prioritize parking arrangements and the distance to dinner options over ocean views. Even if parking is listed as free, ask whether it is first come, first served, uses a mechanical parking system, or has vehicle size limits. For stays of multiple nights, also check whether you can park again after taking your car out.

Where to Eat, Walk, and Stay Over 21 Days
The morning and afternoon sections are a guide for choosing when to set out. Adjust the order to opening hours and road conditions, and prioritize meals and reaching your lodging when travel takes longer than expected. The lodging areas below are places to search, with no guarantee of parking or room availability at any particular property.
Leave Seoul in the morning and take plenty of breaks on the drive to Sokcho. Depending on your arrival time, have makguksu buckwheat noodles or naengmyeon with seasoned pollock in Sokcho for lunch. Spend the afternoon walking around Abai Village, then choose Abai sundae stuffed sausage or squid sundae for dinner. This is the first of two nights in the Cheongchoho Lake or central Sokcho area.
How tired you feel on the first day depends greatly on when you leave Seoul. If you arrive at Abai Village late, it is fine to just have dinner and rest. Do not drive at night to make up for a walk you missed on the first day.
- Abai VillageGoogle MapsA village stroll is enough for the first day.
- Cheongchoho LakeGoogle MapsConsider this area when looking for lodging and dinner options.
In the morning, walk a section of Yeongnangho Lake where it is easy to turn back. For lunch, choose grilled fish or mulhoe, a chilled raw fish soup, near Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. Browse the market in the afternoon, then rest at your lodging. Have grilled fish or seafood stew in the Daepo Port area for dinner. Spend a second night at the same lodging in Sokcho.
This is a day with no change of lodging. If you want to hike in Seoraksan, treat it as a separate option that replaces today's lake and market visits. First check the weather, trail restrictions, and your own hiking experience.
- Yeongnangho LakeGoogle MapsThere is no need to plan a full loop around the lake.
- Sokcho Tourist & Fishery MarketGoogle MapsDecide whether to spend your time on snacks or a full meal.
Drive to Gangneung in the morning and have soft tofu in Chodang-dong for lunch. In the afternoon, choose either Gyeongpo Beach or Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Park for a walk. Have jang-kalguksu, knife-cut noodles in a spicy soybean paste broth, at a restaurant near your lodging for dinner. This is the first of two nights in central Gangneung or the Gyeongpo area.
Full day itineraryThis is a day for traveling between cities and checking in. Gyeongpo and the memorial park are not a checklist you must complete. Choosing just one after your meal in Chodang-dong still works with the itinerary.
- Chodang-dong Soft Tofu Restaurant AreaGoogle MapsAn area to consider for a meal. Check each restaurant's operating days.
- Gyeongpo BeachGoogle MapsAfter arriving, decide how far to walk based on the wind and how tired you feel.
- Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon Memorial ParkGoogle Maps
Visit Ojukheon in the morning. For lunch, choose gamja-ongsimi potato dumpling soup or jang-kalguksu near Gangneung Jungang Market. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the sea at Anmok Beach. Finish the day with grilled fish or a Chodang tofu dish for dinner. Spend a second night at the same lodging in Gangneung.
This day splits time between sightseeing in downtown Gangneung and relaxing by the coast. If the parking wait at Anmok is long, switch to resting downtown instead of continuing to drive around looking for a cafe.
- OjukheonGoogle Maps
- Anmok BeachGoogle MapsIf the wait for a cafe is long, take a beach walk and return to your lodging.
Drive to Uljin in the morning. Have mulhoe or grilled fish in the area where you arrive for lunch. In the afternoon, walk around either Jukbyeon Port or Hupo Port, choosing whichever is closer to your lodging. Uljin snow crab is an optional dinner choice; if the price or required order size does not suit you, choose seafood stew or grilled fish instead. Stay one night in Jukbyeon, Uljin-eup, or Hupo, considering the next day's drive to Gyeongju.
Insisting on staying on the coastal road the entire way can increase travel time. Compare the fastest route with the coastal route in your driving navigation app, and choose just one harbor to reach today. Before ordering snow crab, ask about the market price, origin, weight, and cooking fee.
- Jukbyeon PortGoogle MapsChoose this port if you are staying in the northern area.
- Hupo PortGoogle MapsIf you choose lodging in the south, skip the round trip to Jukbyeon.
Drive to Gyeongju in the morning and have ssambap, rice with leafy wraps and side dishes, after arriving. Visit Daereungwon in the afternoon and take a short walk along Hwangnidan-gil before or after a meal. For dinner, choose a Gyeongju-style Korean set meal or ssambap in the Hwangnidan-gil or Hwangnam-dong area. This is the first of two nights in Hwangnam-dong or central Gyeongju.
Full day itineraryAllow a substantial part of the Uljin-to-Gyeongju leg for driving. Do not add sightseeing in Pohang. If you miss the last admission to Daereungwon, finish the day with a meal on Hwangnidan-gil and an overnight stay.
- DaereungwonGoogle Maps
- Hwangnidan-gilGoogle MapsPark in a designated parking area and walk rather than driving into the narrow streets.
Visit Bulguksa Temple in the morning and have a soft tofu dish nearby for lunch. Devote the afternoon to Gyeongju National Museum. Return downtown for ssambap or another Korean meal, then rest at your lodging. This is the second night at the same lodging in Gyeongju. If nighttime scenery is your priority, replace the museum with an evening visit to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond that day.
Leave time to rest after Bulguksa Temple and the museum. If it rains heavily, visit only the museum instead of Bulguksa. Even if you choose an evening visit, return early enough to be ready for the next day's drive to Busan.
- Bulguksa TempleGoogle Maps
- Gyeongju National MuseumGoogle Maps
- Donggung Palace and Wolji PondGoogle MapsChoose this as an evening alternative instead of trying to fit in both it and the museum.
Drive to Busan in the morning and leave your bags at your lodging in Seomyeon. Have dwaeji-gukbap, pork and rice soup, for lunch, then spend the afternoon walking around Nampo-dong and Jagalchi Market. Have grilled fish near Jagalchi for dinner before returning to Seomyeon. This is the first of three nights in the Seomyeon area. Leave your car at your lodging and explore the old downtown by metro and on foot to avoid repeatedly looking for parking.
Full day itineraryEvery time you move the car in Busan, you will need to deal with parking and city traffic. Ask ahead whether you can leave the car at your lodging while you go out during your stay, and check that day's metro route between Seomyeon and Nampo-dong.
- Jagalchi MarketGoogle Maps
- Nampo-dongGoogle MapsCombine it with the market as one area to explore.
In the morning, walk along Haeundae Beach and the open sections of the Dongbaekseom Island walking path. Have milmyeon, chilled wheat noodles, in the Haeundae area for lunch, then relax by the sea in the afternoon. For dinner, choose raw fish or grilled fish in Gwangalli. If traveling between the two coastal areas feels like too much, skip Gwangalli and stay in Haeundae through dinner. This is the second night at the same lodging in Seomyeon.
Haeundae and Gwangalli are not close enough to treat as one walkable area. Factor in the trip back to Seomyeon when deciding whether to visit both coastal areas. Anyone who will be driving should not drink alcohol with meals.
- Haeundae BeachGoogle Maps
- Dongbaekseom IslandGoogle Maps
- Gwangalli BeachGoogle MapsAn option for dinner. Stay in Haeundae if you are tired.
Sleep in, then start with laundry and tidying your car. Have dwaeji-gukbap or milmyeon in Seomyeon for lunch. In the afternoon, take a short walk in Jeonpo-dong or rest at your lodging. For dinner, choose a meal with Busan fish cakes or another Korean meal at a nearby restaurant. This is the third night at the same lodging in Seomyeon. Dry your laundry and organize your belongings so they are easy to load into the car the next day.
This day has no sightseeing planned. Ask your lodging whether a washer and dryer are available, or find a nearby laundry service. Filling a rest day with a long drive outside the city reduces the benefit of the later stays of two or more nights.
- SeomyeonGoogle MapsKeep today's activities close to your lodging and a place to do laundry.
- Jeonpo Cafe StreetGoogle MapsWalk here only if you still have energy after resting.
Drive to Tongyeong in the morning. Have Chungmu gimbap in the Tongyeong Jungang Market area for lunch, then take a leisurely afternoon walk around Dongpirang and Gangguan Harbor. If steep slopes are difficult for you, skip Dongpirang and stay around Gangguan Harbor. Finish with a Tongyeong-style seafood spread or grilled fish for dinner. Stay one night in the Gangguan Harbor or central Tongyeong area.
Today's main journey is leaving Busan and reaching Tongyeong. Do not book an island ferry or cable car for the same day. Spend the evening walking around town.
- DongpirangGoogle Maps
- Gangguan HarborGoogle MapsA harbor stroll to pair with a meal at Jungang Market.
In the morning, drive to Namhae and have anchovy ssambap, a meal of rice and anchovies wrapped in greens, in the Samdong-myeon area for lunch. In the afternoon, visit Namhae German Village, then head to your lodging. For dinner, choose grilled fish or a seafood dish in Namhae. Stay one night in the Samdong-myeon or Namhae-eup area. Do not add a round trip to the southern beaches after visiting German Village.
In Namhae, even moving between coastal areas requires driving. Choose lodging in the eastern area near German Village or in Namhae-eup, and do not add a distant viewpoint in the evening.
- Namhae German VillageGoogle Maps
- Samdong-myeon dining areaGoogle MapsChoose a restaurant after checking its minimum party size for orders and opening days.
Drive to Suncheon in the morning. For lunch, have a cockle set meal or southern Jeolla-style Korean food downtown. Spend the afternoon at Suncheon Bay National Garden, then choose mudskipper soup or grilled fish downtown for dinner. This is the first of two nights in the Suncheon Station or downtown area. Do not try to visit Suncheon Bay Wetland on the same day.
Full day itineraryThis is the day you travel from Namhae to Suncheon. If you reach the garden late, postpone the visit until the next day instead of rushing before closing. In that case, choose either the garden or the wetland the next day.
- Suncheon Bay National GardenGoogle MapsStart with the sections you most want to see instead of trying to walk through the entire garden.
- Around Suncheon StationGoogle MapsAn area to look for lodging for both nights and a dinner restaurant.
In the morning, walk the open trails at Suncheon Bay Wetland. Decide on-site whether to continue to the observatory based on the weather and your energy level. Have mudskipper soup or a cockle dish near the wetland for lunch, then return downtown to rest in the afternoon. For dinner, have gukbap, rice soup, in the Utjang Market area. Spend a second night at the same lodging in Suncheon.
You can shorten the wetland visit depending on the weather and trail conditions. If you want to see the sunset, move the visit from morning to afternoon, and plan enough rest so fatigue does not affect driving after dark.
- Suncheon Bay WetlandGoogle MapsThis is a separate destination from the garden. Do not enter closed trails.
- Suncheon Utjang MarketGoogle MapsA possible dinner area. Check individual businesses' opening hours.
Drive to Mokpo in the morning. For lunch, choose a Korean home-style set meal or a croaker dish downtown. In the afternoon, walk around the Mokpo Modern History Museum area and visit exhibitions that are open. For dinner, have Mokpo-style octopus or grilled fish. This is the first of two nights in the old downtown or Peace Square area of Mokpo. Choose one of these two lodging areas for the evening.
After traveling from Suncheon to Mokpo, stay within the old downtown area. Whether to order croaker depends on the season and the dishes being served. If it is unavailable that day, switching to a Korean home-style set meal will not affect the rest of the itinerary.
- Mokpo Modern History MuseumGoogle MapsCheck each museum building's opening hours and last admission for your visit date.
- Mokpo old downtownGoogle MapsOn arrival day, keep your meals and sightseeing within this area.
In the morning, take a short walk on the Gatbawi overwater walkway if it is open and the weather is suitable. Have braised cutlassfish or a Mokpo-style home-style set meal for lunch, then visit the Mokpo Natural History Museum in the afternoon. For dinner, choose croaker soup, an octopus dish, or grilled fish based on your budget and available ingredients. Spend a second night at the same lodging in Mokpo.
The Gatbawi walk and the Natural History Museum are grouped in the same area. If the overwater walkway is closed, visit only the indoor exhibits. Do not automatically fill the spare time with a cable car ride or a hike up Yudalsan.
- Mokpo Gatbawi RockGoogle MapsSkip the walkway if there are strong winds or access restrictions.
- Mokpo Natural History MuseumGoogle Maps
Drive to Jeonju in the morning. Have Jeonju bibimbap for lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring as much of the Hanok Village's lanes and Gyeonggijeon Shrine as you like. For dinner, choose bean sprout rice soup or a Korean home-style set meal in the Nambu Market area. This is the first of two nights just outside the Hanok Village within walking distance, or in downtown Jeonju. If you choose hanok lodging, first ask about vehicle access and the distance to its separate parking lot.
Full day itineraryThis is a driving day from Mokpo north to Jeonju. Park at your lodging or a designated parking lot and walk, rather than driving into the central lanes of the Hanok Village. If you arrive late, move Gyeonggijeon Shrine to an optional visit the next morning.
- Jeonju Hanok VillageGoogle Maps
- Gyeonggijeon ShrineGoogle Maps
- Nambu MarketGoogle MapsLook for regular restaurants without assuming the night market will be open.
In the morning, visit the accessible areas of Jeondong Cathedral and walk through the Hanok Village. Have bean sprout rice soup for lunch, then choose between visiting the Jeonju National Museum and resting at your lodging in the afternoon. Finish with a Jeonju-style home-style set meal for dinner. Spend a second night at the same lodging in Jeonju. Skip the cathedral interior if a liturgy or event is taking place.
This is another day in Jeonju without changing lodging, giving you a chance to do laundry or tidy the car. If taking the car out again to visit the museum feels like too much trouble, relax in the Hanok Village and save your energy for the final few days.
- Jeondong CathedralGoogle MapsGive priority to people praying or attending services, and follow photography rules.
- Jeonju National MuseumGoogle MapsAn indoor option for the afternoon. If it is closed, rest at your lodging.
Drive to Buyeo in the morning and visit only the Buyeo National Museum. For lunch, have rice steamed in a lotus leaf or a Korean home-style set meal in Buyeo. In the afternoon, drive to your lodging in Gongju, unpack, and rest. For dinner, choose rice soup or a meal featuring chestnuts in the Gongju Sanseong Market area. Stay one night in downtown Gongju. Do not try to see all the historic sites in both Buyeo and Gongju in one day.
Today you travel from Jeonju to Buyeo, then continue to your next lodging in Gongju. Limit sightseeing in Buyeo to the museum. If it is closed, take a walk around Gungnamji Pond instead, without adding Busosanseong Fortress.
- Buyeo National MuseumGoogle MapsThe one main sightseeing stop planned for Buyeo.
- Gongju Sanseong MarketGoogle MapsIn Gongju, focus on dinner and your overnight stay.
In the morning, walk a section of Gongsanseong Fortress that suits your energy level, then drive to Taean. After arriving, have clam noodle soup for lunch. Relax at Kkotji Beach in the afternoon, then choose ge-gukji, crab and cabbage soup, or blue crab soup for dinner. Stay one night in the Anmyeon-eup or Kkotji Beach area. If you leave Gongsanseong Fortress late, shorten the beach walk and check in first.
You still need to drive to Taean after sightseeing in Gongju. Skip Gongsanseong Fortress if it is raining or you leave late. If waves are high or the beach is closed when you arrive, stay indoors at your lodging or a restaurant.
- Gongsanseong FortressGoogle MapsDo not aim to walk the entire fortress wall.
- Kkotji BeachGoogle MapsFinish the day in the Anmyeondo area without adding a round trip to Mallipo or Sinduri.
In the morning, take a short walk on a beach near your lodging, then load your luggage into the car. Have clam noodle soup or grilled fish for lunch in Anmyeon-eup or near your lodging. Return to Seoul in the afternoon. If traffic is expected, skip the beach walk and leave early, then have dinner somewhere nearby after getting home. Your 21-day, 20-night trip ends today with no additional overnight stay.
On the final day, decide first what time you want to arrive in Seoul. Allow time to organize your luggage, stop at rest areas, and enter the city. If fatigue has built up, switch drivers or rest thoroughly in a safe place before setting off.

Google MapsFood and restaurants
- Along the east coast, alternate among Sokcho's sundae blood sausage and fish dishes, Gangneung's Chodang tofu and spicy jang-kalguksu noodle soup, and Uljin's seafood. If repeated meals of raw fish or chilled raw fish soup feel like too much, choose cooked options such as tofu, noodles, or grilled fish. On the day you go for Chodang tofu, include sightseeing in Chodang-dong so you avoid a round trip just for a meal.
- In Gyeongju, plan meals around ssambap rice wraps and soft tofu; in Busan, pork soup with rice and milmyeon noodles. Treat Tongyeong's Chungmu gimbap as a full meal and share honey bread as a snack. For dishes ordered for the table, such as Namhae's anchovy ssambap, ask about the minimum number of diners and portion sizes first.
- Menus and prices for Suncheon's cockle and mudskipper dishes and Mokpo's croaker and octopus dishes vary with ingredient availability and the season. Avoid tying reservations together so that the day depends on eating a particular dish. Keep a home-style set meal or grilled fish in the same area as a backup. If you have a seafood allergy, ask whether seafood is also used in the broth, salted seafood condiments, or side dishes.
- Spread regional meals across the route: bibimbap and bean sprout soup with rice in Jeonju, lotus leaf rice in Buyeo, chestnut dishes in Gongju, and clam noodle soup or ge gukji crab soup in Taean. If snacks leave you too full for meals, you can skip a meal. For ge gukji or blue crab soup, check the ordering size and ingredients first. If the portions are too large for one person, switch to noodle soup or a home-style set meal.
- Find lunch and dinner options in the area you are walking through that day instead of traveling just to visit a famous restaurant. Map listings may not reflect actual hours or closing days, so check the restaurant's own notices before leaving and confirm directly whether reservations are needed, parking is available, and extra fees apply. Drivers must not drink alcohol.
How to fit it in
This route is for travelers who can devote three full weeks to a road trip from Seoul and are comfortable moving their luggage from city to city. It suits those who want a mix of local food and walks by the sea and through cities, rather than a packed sightseeing schedule. If your priority is long hikes or island stays, add nights in those areas and cut cities from the later part of this loop.
Reality check
A car is the main way to travel between cities. Actual driving times depend on your starting point, accommodations, weekend traffic, and weather, so this guide does not guarantee fixed times or distances. Check the route to your next accommodation the day before, then check live driving directions again on the day. Coastal roads are not always the fastest option. On days spent walking through city centers such as Busan and Jeonju, leave the car at your accommodation and combine walking with public transit.
The full trip is 21 days and 20 nights. On travel days, plan only a morning drive, lunch, one area in the afternoon, and arrival at your accommodation. Be especially careful about adding stops on the Uljin → Gyeongju, Busan → Tongyeong, Mokpo → Jeonju, and Jeonju → Buyeo → Gongju legs. Add an activity with a fixed reservation time only on a day that still has breathing room after adding rest stops, meals, and parking time to the map app's estimate.
The following is a hypothetical example to show how to calculate a budget, not current prices or an actual quote. Assume two people share one room and travel in their own car, using these inputs: KRW 90,000 per room per night, KRW 60,000 per day for food for two, fuel efficiency of 12 km/L, and fuel at KRW 1,700/L. With KRW 1,800,000 for 20 nights of lodging + KRW 1,260,000 for 21 days of food + about KRW 354,000 in fuel for an assumed 2,500 km + KRW 160,000 for tolls and parking + KRW 120,000 for admission + KRW 40,000 for laundry, the total before a contingency fund is about KRW 3,734,000. Add about KRW 373,000, or 10% of that subtotal, as a contingency fund, and the total is about KRW 4,110,000 for two, or about KRW 2,050,000 per person if split equally. The total and per-person share are each rounded to the nearest KRW 10,000. The 2,500 km figure is not a measured distance for this route; replace it with the total navigation distance using your actual accommodations and stops. Replace room, food, and fuel inputs with actual amounts for your booking dates and refueling stops, and recalculate tolls, parking, and admission for your chosen route and facilities. Rental car fees, insurance, and additional driver fees are extra. There is no guarantee your actual costs will be lower.
If you feel sleepy while driving, rest takes priority over planned sightseeing. Pull over somewhere safe before operating the navigation system. Follow coastal barriers, breakwater access restrictions, and wetland trail notices, and shorten coastal walks during strong winds or heavy rain. If traveling in winter, check snow, ice, and vehicle equipment for the roads leading to Gangwon's east coast. If roads are closed, delay departure or change the first leg.
If plans change
Keep Gyeongju National Museum, Mokpo Natural History Museum, and Jeonju National Museum as indoor options in their respective cities. If it rains on a day when Buyeo National Museum is closed, head to your accommodation in Gongju instead of forcing in an outdoor alternative. Check museum closures, reservation requirements, and exhibition changes for your visit date.
Cancel beach walks in Sokcho, Gangneung, Uljin, Busan, and Taean, as well as walks on Mokpo's Gatbawi pedestrian bridge. Finish the day with food and rest near your accommodation, and do not detour onto breakwaters or coastal rocks. Stay away until an official notice confirms that weather restrictions have been lifted.
Skip the Suncheon Bay Wetland observatory and the full walk along the Gongsanseong Fortress walls. Visit only open sections near the entrances. Rest indoors or at your accommodation around midday, and move outdoor walks to before dinner during seasons with shorter daylight hours.
Swap Uljin snow crab for grilled fish, Suncheon cockles for soup with rice, Mokpo croaker for a home-style set meal, and Taean blue crab dishes for clam noodle soup. Changing meals within the same area avoids the need to rebook accommodations or the next day's travel.
Cut back on afternoon sightseeing first, and rest at highway rest areas and your accommodation. If fatigue continues, review the change and cancellation terms for your remaining stays, then spend longer in one base or shorten the route home. Do not push through all 21 days simply because you have already booked them.
Small tip
Start booking after writing down the travel order and all 20 nights. Decide whether you can keep the same room for consecutive nights, where you will do laundry, and which outdoor plans you will cancel if it rains. This will leave fewer decisions to make during the trip. Keep one day of your three-night Busan stay for rest.
Final check before departure
- Mark your departure from Seoul on Day 1 and return to Seoul on Day 21 on your calendar, and confirm that your accommodations total exactly 20 nights.
- Ask about parking arrangements, vehicle restrictions, reentry rules, and the walking distance to dinner options at accommodations where you will stay multiple nights.
- Decide how you will do laundry on your rest day in Busan, and avoid scheduling reserved activities immediately after long travel days.
- Check official opening days, last admission times, reservation requirements, and coastal restrictions for your actual travel dates.
- Save the next day's accommodation, designated parking lot, and lunch options on your map. Map search results do not guarantee parking availability or that a business will be open.
- Check the vehicle's condition, insurance, and driver requirements. If several people will drive, decide in advance who will take turns.
This is a basic overland loop with no travel month specified, excluding Jeju. It does not include Jeju or visits to every province and metropolitan city. Facility closures, last admission times, trail access, coastal restrictions, and restaurant hours vary by travel date. If weather or road conditions are poor that day, cut back on sightseeing or delay your drive.
