At a glance
- Choose Mělník for the scenery where the Vltava and Elbe (Labe) meet and the feel of a wine town.
- Litoměřice is a good choice if you want a relaxed walk around a square and Baroque buildings.
- Trying to visit both in one day can mean a lot of transfer time. Choose one based on the season and your departure time.
- Save a riverside walk for the end if the weather is good, and visit the museum or square first.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Go from your Prague accommodation to Ládví on Line C, take bus 369 to Mělník, aut.nádr., then walk to Náměstí Míru in the old town. Once you arrive, first decide where to have lunch and find a restroom.
Walk from the square to the area around St. Peter and Paul Church, then to the river confluence viewpoint, for 2–3 hours. Add either a chateau interior visit or a tasting only if the official booking time works; don’t assume it’s included in the old town walk.
Allow 20 minutes to walk downhill to the bus station, plus waiting time, then take your saved bus back to Ládví. Save the two departures before the last one, and leave Litoměřice as an option for another day.
Places and meals
Walk at an easy pace for river confluence views and the old town.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Choose Mělník for river views and wine, or Litoměřice for its square and lanes. There’s no need to combine both in one day.
Reality check
For Mělník, check the departure stop for buses from Prague and the walk from the Mělník terminus to the Old Town. For Litoměřice, choose the train or bus with fewer transfers on your visit date, and check the actual departure and arrival stations, such as Praha hl.n. Don’t link the two cities in one day; choose just one that you can reach and return from using the same mode of transport.
Choose one city and set aside a full day, including round-trip transport from Prague and local travel. Depending on your connections, you may have limited time in the Old Town, so don’t try to fit in both a castle or museum and a winery.
Prague’s city fare zone does not automatically include Mělník. In PID Lítačka, enter your starting point, destination, and Prague zone pass to check the zones and validity you need. Budget for the round-trip bus and lunch; the chateau, museum, and tasting are optional expenses. Check current prices through the transit search and official venue booking pages.
Don’t drive after drinking, and watch your step at river viewpoints and on old stone paths.
If plans change
In Mělník, focus on the river confluence views and a walk through the old town. If you’d prefer more indoor history, switch to Litoměřice.
Choose only a town with a more reliable direct round trip, or skip the day trip and continue with river views and old town walks in Prague.
Small tip
First choose the city where you want to go wine tasting or visit a castle, then save your Prague departure and return connections. Aim to return one train or bus before the last departure, and check whether you can get from your arrival stop to your Prague accommodation at night. If wine tasting is the goal, don’t drive.
Final check before departure
- For river and wine views, choose Mělník: compare round-trip bus and train options from Prague, and check chateau and tasting hours. If you’re not tasting wine or the weather is poor, stick to the old town and river confluence viewpoint.
- For an old town walk and history, choose Litoměřice: check the trip from the arrival station or bus stop to the center, and museum closing days.
- Save your return trip first, regardless of transport: aim for a bus or train before the final connection, and check IDOS and carrier notices on the day for platform or stop changes.
- Budget for tasting, lunch, and local transport: treat chateau and museum admission and wine tasting as optional expenses, and check the booking page’s payment and cancellation terms.
Check PID and venue notices for bus 369 service, stops, construction detours, and chateau and tasting hours on your visit date. Walk to the river confluence viewpoint only if the weather is good and it’s open. In heavy rain or during closures, don’t insist on going near high railings.
