At a glance
- The Pilsner Urquell Brewery tour visits the modern brewing facility and underground lager cellars. For adults, it includes a 0.3 L tasting of unfiltered, unpasteurized beer drawn from an oak barrel. The official tour lasts 100 minutes, and the address is U Prazdroje 64/7. Book an English-language tour; beer tasting is for visitors age 18 and over only.
- Republic Square is the Old Town’s main landmark. It’s an easy starting point for the cathedral, cafés, and restaurants. If you plan to climb the cathedral tower, check the last entry time before it closes.
- The Great Synagogue is an option if you want to see the interior and exhibitions on the Jewish community. Current official information lists opening hours as 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. It is closed Friday and Saturday and on Jewish holidays, and may close early for event preparations.
- The Pilsen Historic Underground is visited on a guided tour. The 60-minute tour covers about 800 m of medieval passageways, 5–7 m below ground. It is a separate attraction from the brewery’s beer production and storage cellars, and its entrance is at Veleslavínova 58/6. Prioritize one of the two tours for the day. If you book both, leave time between them for lunch and travel.

Set the tour time first
A day planned around a reservation
The brewery tour is the reference point for this itinerary. If your tour is in the afternoon, see the square and cathedral first. It’s better to save the underground for another day.
Praha hlavní nádraží → Plzeň hlavní nádraží → Pilsner Urquell Brewery tour. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the tour starts.
Brewery → Republic Square → St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral. Choose either the observation tower or the Great Synagogue.
Add the Historic Underground only if a tour time works → Plzeň hlavní nádraží → return to Prague.
Places and meals
A key attraction in Plzeň. Booking the official tour in advance is a good idea if you want to visit the underground cellars and taste unfiltered beer.
Google MapsThe central square in Plzeň’s Old Town. Use it as your landmark for visiting the cathedral and nearby restaurants.
Google MapsThe cathedral has a 102.26 m tower, the tallest church spire in Czechia. Check opening hours for the observation tower, which has about 300 steps.
Google MapsAn indoor option for a day when you want to learn about the history of the Jewish community and see the synagogue’s architecture.
Google MapsA guided tour of the medieval underground passages. Check that the tour time doesn’t overlap with your brewery tour.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
If you’re short on time, visit just the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, Republic Square, and St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral. On a day with a brewery tour, adding either the Great Synagogue or the observation tower leaves more breathing room than trying to fit in the underground as well.
Reality check
First, look for a direct train from Praha hlavní nádraží to Plzeň hlavní nádraží. Plan on about 1 hour 20–35 minutes each way, but check the search results for your visit date for departure stations, transfers, or replacement transport due to construction. The city’s trams, buses, and trolleybuses are all part of the PMDP transport system. The official adult fare for Zone 001 is 24 CZK for 30 minutes, 28 CZK for 60 minutes, 50 CZK for 3 hours, or 84 CZK for 24 hours. You can buy a ticket with a contactless bank card at a Cardman terminal on board. Tap the same card when you board to choose a ticket, and keep it with your payment method unchanged in case of a transfer or ticket inspection. Many parts between the Old Town and brewery are also walkable.
Allow 8–10 hours, including the Prague round trip and local travel. The brewery tour takes 100 minutes according to the official information, while the Historic Underground tour takes about 60 minutes. Fitting in both tours, a meal, and the cathedral tower makes for a tight day.
Your basic costs are round-trip transport from Prague and the brewery tour. Add the tower, underground, or Great Synagogue one at a time to manage cost and time. For local transport, decide whether a 30-minute ticket is enough for a single ride or a 60-minute ticket gives you room to transfer. Fares can change, so check the PMDP fare list and the display on the on-board terminal before you travel.
The brewery cellars are about 5°C, so bring a warm layer and sturdy closed-toe shoes. You’ll wear a helmet in the Historic Underground, and children under 3 are not allowed. The underground is not wheelchair accessible, and neither tour allows you to leave partway through. After tasting beer, drink water and take it easy, keeping the tower stairs and return train in mind.
If plans change
Walk around Republic Square, the cathedral, and the Great Synagogue. Check the official website for access terms for the brewery restaurant or gift shop. Don’t buy tickets from unofficial resellers.
Choose just the brewery tour or the underground tour, whichever you booked. Take a short walk around the square to see the surrounding buildings’ exteriors, then return to Prague.
Prioritize the cathedral tower and the Great Synagogue, and save the brewery tour for another visit.
Small tip
The brewery tour is the anchor for a day built around a fixed start time. First leave enough time after the tour to walk to the Old Town and catch your evening train back. Then it’s easier to choose a cathedral, synagogue, or underground visit that fits the free time.
Final check before departure
- Check the tour language, start time, and age requirements on the official brewery booking page.
- Save both your outbound train from Prague to Plzeň and your return train from Plzeň to Prague; don’t rely on just the last train.
- Check opening hours and last admission for the cathedral tower, the Great Synagogue, and the Historic Underground.
- For city transport, follow the day’s PMDP fares and transfer rules, along with the instructions on the on-board terminal.
Train times between Prague and Plzeň, and tour times for the brewery, tower, and underground, vary by date. For your visit date, search for a round trip on Czech Railways or IDOS, then check the official booking pages for each attraction for tour language, start times, and last admission. The brewery has announced that wheelchair access will be unavailable from April 13, 2026, due to construction. If you need accessible entry, ask whether access has resumed before booking.
