At a glance
- Olomouc is a historic university city in the Moravia region of eastern Czechia. Its large squares, town hall, fountains, and religious architecture make it a good choice for a trip on foot through the city center.
- The Holy Trinity Column in Upper Square was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city’s official information says major restoration work will continue through the end of 2026, so don’t plan your trip solely around seeing it without scaffolding.
- The south tower of St. Wenceslas Cathedral is 100.65 m tall. Seeing its tall spire and climbing the tower are different plans, so this itinerary focuses on the exterior and any interior visit that may be available.

Early departure · Walk in two areas
5–6 hours in the city
This is a suggested time allocation, not a timetable tied to specific train departures. Allow time to get from the central station to the Old Town, have lunch, and return to the station before adding an optional visit.
After arriving at Olomouc hlavní nádraží, check the day’s tram connections to the Old Town. Set Horní náměstí as your first destination; the station and the square are not in the same place.
- Local tram connection
- Arrive at Upper Square
See the town hall exterior and fountains in Horní náměstí, then walk to Dolní náměstí. Follow any construction barriers around the Holy Trinity Column. If it is screened off, spend your time enjoying the town hall and the square.
- Town hall and square
- Fountains and Old Town streets
Have lunch near the squares, then decide where to go next. To try Moravian food or Olomouc cheese, look for dishes with Olomoucké tvarůžky on the menu. It has a strong smell, so start with a small portion.
- Lunch and a break
- Check the walking route to the cathedral
Head to Václavské náměstí to see the cathedral exterior. Interior access depends on services, events, and visitor opening hours. If it is closed, finish with the exterior and a walk through the surrounding streets. If you want to add the Archbishop’s Palace or a museum, adjust the time for this section.
- Cathedral exterior
- Interior visit if open
Finish sightseeing and head to the station 45–60 minutes before your return train leaves. Leave time for the tram and finding your platform; don’t keep sightseeing until the last moment before boarding.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Walk between Upper Square, Lower Square, and the cathedral, with time for lunch. If you want to visit a museum or the Archbishop’s Palace, check its opening days and tour times, then add just one. On a day when you have an evening show or reservation in Prague, nearby Poděbrady or Plzeň is more convenient for a day trip.
Reality check
A direct train from Praha hlavní nádraží to Olomouc hlavní nádraží usually takes about 2 hours 10–30 minutes each way. Czech Railways and private operators have different fares, seat reservation rules, and cancellation policies. Check the selected operator’s round-trip booking page for the departure station and train, and allow time for a tram ride between the local station and the Old Town.
Allow about 10–12 hours for the day: 4 hours 20 minutes to 5 hours round trip by train, 5–6 hours in the city, and extra time for station connections and the return. If you can’t spend 5 hours in the city, choose a closer destination or stay overnight in Olomouc.
Your basic costs are round-trip train tickets, local tram fares, and lunch. You don’t need to book a paid tour to see the squares and building exteriors. Check opening hours and admission prices, then choose just one palace or museum visit. Compare ticket terms by train operator.
Don’t plan to rely on just one last train. Save alternative departures before and after your booked return train and check the ticket change rules. If you arrive late, skip the museum to leave enough time to return to the station. Stay out of restoration areas and follow the cathedral’s rules for visiting and photography during services.
If plans change
Keep Upper Square, lunch, and the cathedral; skip any extra museum. Add only one indoor visit whose opening has been confirmed for that day.
Switch to Poděbrady, about an hour each way, or stay overnight in Olomouc and return the next day. Don’t pair an evening reservation in Prague with a long-distance day trip.
Small tip
If the restoration work on the column would disappoint you, postpone your trip if seeing it without scaffolding is your main goal. You can still enjoy the university city’s squares, food, and cathedral without making the column the focus of the day.
Final check before departure
- Choose an early direct train out and an evening train back, and allow at least 5 hours in the city.
- Save the day’s tram connection from Olomouc Central Station to the squares and how to buy a ticket.
- Check the column restoration status and whether the cathedral and any optional museum will be open on your visit date.
- Check each operator’s seat reservation, ticket change, and cancellation rules, as well as alternatives for your return.
According to the official Olomouc city information, major restoration of the Holy Trinity Column will continue through the end of 2026. Scaffolding and access restrictions may change on the day. Check the official timetables for any rail works or local tram detours on your visit date.
