At a glance
- On a rainy day, make one museum the focus and choose a café and bookstore in the same neighborhood.
- If you choose the National Museum, you can add Wenceslas Square; if you choose the Old Town, you can add a small exhibition and a short riverside walk.
- Save Charles Bridge and the castle hill, with their slippery cobblestones, for when the weather clears.
- Special exhibitions may have different ticket requirements or closing days, so check the official website.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
On a rainy day, the goal isn’t to see the most sights; it’s to find one place where you can stay comfortably out of the rain.
Reality check
Choose an indoor venue near a tram stop and metro entrance to reduce transfers.
Allow 2–4 hours for one major museum and 1–2 hours for a meal and café stop.
Budget separately for admission to one major exhibition and food and drinks at a café. If you need a free place to rest, use a museum’s public areas, station passages, or a short walk when the rain lets up instead of a paid café.
Slow down on wet cobblestones, tram tracks, and escalators to avoid slipping.
If plans change
Look again for an open exhibition in the same area. The Czech Museum of Music is closed through December 31, 2026, so don’t use it as an alternative.
You don’t have to stay until you’ve seen the entire exhibition; switch to a free walk along the river or through a square nearby.
Small tip
Instead of visiting all three museums, spend longer at one exhibition and add a short walk when the rain eases.
Final check before departure
- Choose one open museum as your base for the area: the National Museum in the New Town, the Smetana Museum in the Old Town, or the Trade Fair Palace in Holešovice.
- Leave the Czech Museum of Music out of your alternatives: according to its official notice, it is closed from June 29 through December 31, 2026. If you need an indoor alternative in Malá Strana, look up another venue that is open that day.
- Check opening hours for each exhibition: distinguish general admission from timed reservations for specific programs, and arrive well before the last entry time.
- Choose a café currently open within a 10-minute walk of the museum. Don’t lock in one place; check its hours and seating availability on the day you go.
In heavy rain, tram delays and wet cobblestones can be bigger factors than museum closures.
