At a glance
- Terezín is a place of remembrance, so don’t add other Prague attractions to the same day.
- Allow plenty of time to get around and visit after arriving by train or bus.
- Rather than trying to see every exhibition and cemetery, visit one area at a time and follow the guidance on site.
- Before you leave, check the official memorial information for return transport and closures.
- Getting from Prague to Terezín involves a bus ride and walking locally. Before you leave, search IDOS for the bus terminus and return trip on your actual travel date. Save walking routes from the arrival stop to both the Ghetto Museum and the Small Fortress. If you assume the two sites are next to each other, you may not leave enough time to visit them.
- The Small Fortress and the former ghetto are separate memorial sites. If you have time for only one, first decide whether you want to learn about the prison’s history or life in the ghetto and deportations. If you visit both, set aside the whole day for travel, exhibits, and time to reflect quietly, and aim to catch a bus one departure before the last one.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Prague accommodation → Line C, Letňany → bus 413 → Terezín, aut. nádr. Follow the journey time and boarding point shown in the PID timetable for your visit date.
Visit the Ghetto Museum → take a break → visit the Small Fortress. You’ll need to travel between the two areas, so check the visitor map and allow time to walk.
After visiting the Small Fortress, take a return service toward Letňany from Terezín, U Památníku. Check that your service stops there, and don’t confuse it with the stop in the opposite direction.
Places and meals
Learn about the history of the political prison and follow the guidance on site.
Google MapsExhibitions about life in the ghetto, persecution, and deportation.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
Set aside a full day in Terezín to learn about the Holocaust and the history of the Nazi occupation. Don’t treat it as a backup option to another sightseeing stop.
Reality check
From the bus terminal at Letňany, the last stop on Prague Metro Line C, check PID bus 413 toward Terezín and Litoměřice. If visiting the Ghetto Museum first, compare the Terezín, aut. nádr. stop; if visiting the Small Fortress first, compare Terezín, U Památníku. For your travel date, save the search results showing stops, boarding point, and return service.
In addition to travel time from your accommodation to Letňany, allow about 1 hour 30 minutes as a planning buffer for the one-way PID 413 bus from Letňany to Terezín. Keep 8–10 hours free for visiting both areas, walking, and breaks. The bus time of about 1 hour 30 minutes is a planning estimate; use the PID search results for your travel date for the actual ride time and last bus.
Check whether the combined ticket includes both the Small Fortress and the Ghetto Museum, and whether the guide’s language and start time work for you.
The exhibitions can be emotionally difficult. If traveling with children, consider their age and prepare them in advance.
If plans change
Spend more time in one key area that’s open, either the Small Fortress or the Ghetto Museum. Walk quietly between memorial sites instead of trying to visit as many places as possible.
Stop your visit and return to Prague to rest. Don’t add nightlife or flashy photo spots as a way to make up for it that day.
Small tip
Make time to read the explanations instead of focusing on photos. Don’t pose with a smile or stage photos in memorial areas.
Final check before departure
- Check the memorial areas and tour times first: The museums, Small Fortress, and ghetto area at Terezín Memorial are separate places. Check official opening hours and tour languages, and decide what you’ll skip if needed before setting out.
- Save both the bus to and from Prague and the last return service: Check the timetable for the departure terminal, arrival stop, and walking segments. In peak season, consider seat availability in both directions or find an alternative connection. Don’t rely on the last service as your only option.
- Leave time for lunch and a break: This is an emotionally difficult visit, so don’t add another castle or winery. Decide where to rest afterward and how to get back to your accommodation in Prague.
- Add up admission, tours, and round-trip transport: Check the memorial ticket, guided tour, and bus or train fares separately. If the schedule changes or a tour is sold out, it’s better to choose another operating day than to substitute Prague’s Jewish Museum.
Opening hours differ, so check the last admission time for the Small Fortress and Ghetto Museum separately.
