At a glance
- Missing the last boat–mountain railway connection can derail the day
- First settle the lakeside portion in St. Gilgen, then fit in the boat trip and St. Wolfgang without overlap.
- Leave enough time for the Schafberg railway, the return journey, and getting back to your accommodation.
- If the mountain railway is sold out, stick to the lake boat and a village walk
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Plan your return by working backward from bus 150 to Salzburg through this travel sequence: descent from Schafberg → departure from the St. Wolfgang Schafbergbahn pier → disembark at the St. Gilgen pier → walk to St. Gilgen Busbahnhof → take bus 150 to Salzburg. Allow extra time to walk and wait after the boat arrives.
Include the boat trip only after confirming it runs on your travel date and checking the arrival time. If the connection is tight, skip the boat and walk around the village instead.
Go to the summit only if there is time for a round trip on the mountain railway. If the weather is poor, trains are sold out, or service is suspended, finish with a boat ride and a walk in St. Wolfgang.
Places and meals
Check the departure pier and destination name.

This works well if you want to set aside a day in Salzburg for a lake trip and Alpine views.
Reality check
Take bus 150 from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to St. Gilgen Busbahnhof, then walk to the St. Gilgen pier. Start by allowing about 1 hour for the bus and 30 minutes after getting off for finding the pier and waiting, but check actual departures with Salzburg Verkehr. Choose a boat that connects with the St. Wolfgang Schafbergbahn stop for easier access to the mountain railway.
With the bus round trip, walk to the pier, boat, and mountain railway, this is a full-day itinerary. Use about 1 hour for the bus as a baseline, but coordinate boat and railway transfers with the timetable for your travel date. If the connections do not work, enjoy the lakeside and boat only.
A combined boat and mountain railway ticket is not always the cheapest option, so compare individual tickets using your departure point and round-trip route.
The summit can be colder and windier than the lakeshore. Keep a walk in St. Wolfgang as a backup if services are suspended.
If plans change
Walk along the St. Gilgen lakeshore and through the village without taking the boat, then return to Salzburg on a bus you have checked in advance.
If the boat is running, scale back to a walk in St. Wolfgang. If strong winds or rain also make the boat unreliable, switch to an indoor day in Salzburg.
Small tip
Do not reuse an old timetable. Match the boat arrival and mountain railway departure intervals for your travel date on the official booking pages.
Final check before departure
- Check the official Lake Wolfgangsee boat timetable for service on your travel date and the arrival time in St. Wolfgang.
- Check the official Schafberg Railway page for service, booking conditions, and the last train down.
- Save a connection for the bus back to Salzburg that leaves before the final departure.
Missing the last boat and mountain railway connection can also disrupt your return to Salzburg. Before departure, check the bus to Salzburg, the Lake Wolfgangsee boat, and Schafbergbahn service on your travel date, including the last available departures.
