At a glance
- Tickets for self-guided viewing are available without a reservation. Basic viewing takes about 15–30 minutes, or 15–40 minutes with the audio guide. Bring a smartphone and earphones for the Korean audio guide. The Japanese-language guided tour with tasting lasts about 55 minutes and requires advance booking.
- The tasting hall is open 11:00–18:30, with last orders at 18:00; seating is limited to 30 minutes. You may have to wait when it is full, and you cannot even join the tasting queue after last orders. Entering at the museum’s 17:30 last admission leaves little time to finish tasting too.
- If you take a bus from Sapporo Station, check the platform and route on the day. Connecting everything on foot can be tiring, depending on your luggage and the weather.
- Do not reserve seasonal outdoor seating simply because the venue is called a beer garden. Menus, hours, and group-size conditions differ across the red-brick Kaitakushi Hall, Poplar Hall, Lilac, Garden Grill, and other restaurants. Choose a restaurant using the official comparison table, then check the dining format and cancellation rules. Museum tickets and restaurant reservations are separate.
- On the regular tour with tasting, adults who do not drink alcohol choose two glasses of nonalcoholic beer or soft drinks. Junior high school students through age 19 choose two soft drinks; elementary school children receive one soft drink. For preschool children, choose self-guided viewing instead of the tour.

A plan that keeps you on schedule
A practical order for your visit
This is a cautious itinerary for first-time visitors. Travel times vary with your lodging location and the weather, so check directions on a map before you go.
For self-guided viewing without a reservation, use 15:30–16:00 as an example arrival plan to leave time before the 17:30 last admission. For a reserved guided tour, follow the start and check-in times on your ticket. After viewing while listening to the commentary, allow time for waiting at the tasting hall.
- 11:00~18:00
- Last admission: 17:30
Pay for tasting after self-guided viewing, or enjoy the tasting included in a reserved tour. Do not count the tasting costs for both options together. If you have a restaurant reservation, leave time to walk over and check in before eating lamb barbecue. If you have already drunk enough or are full, return downtown for a light dinner.
- Last tasting order: 18:00
- Check meal reservations and wait times
Places and meals
Use the paid tasting hall after paid museum viewing, or take a reserved tour with tasting included. There is no beer-production equipment inside the museum; this is a different location from the Hokkaido brewery in Eniwa.
Google MapsWhen choosing a lamb barbecue venue, distinguish indoor restaurants from seasonal outdoor seating. Menus, opening hours, and closures differ by restaurant, so save the details of the one you book.
Google MapsDecide these first
First choose whether to taste after visiting the museum, compare two glasses on a reserved tour, or only dine at the beer garden. Self-guided viewing also has an admission fee, and the tasting hall cannot be used on its own. Lamb barbecue requires a separate restaurant reservation.
Reality check
Choose a beer-garden-serving bus: route 188 from stop 2 north of Sapporo Station, or route 環88 from the stop south of Tokyu Department Store on the station’s south side. Walking is also possible: about 8 minutes from JR Naebo Station’s north exit or 10 minutes from exit 4 of Higashi-Kuyakusho-Mae Station on the Toho Line. Recheck bus services and boarding locations for your travel date.
Allow 60–90 minutes for the museum, or 2–3 hours or more if you’re including a tasting and meal.
At standard rates, self-guided viewing costs 1,000 yen for adults, 500 yen for junior high school students through age 19, and is free for elementary school children and younger. Tasting after self-guided viewing costs extra: Black Label and Classic are 450 yen each, Kaitakushi Beer is 550 yen, and a three-beer comparison is 1,200 yen. The roughly 55-minute guided tour with two tasting glasses costs 2,000 yen for adults. Beer garden food and drinks are charged separately.
In Japan, anyone under 20 cannot drink alcohol. Drivers cannot take part in beer tasting, and do not ride a bicycle after drinking. Nondrinkers should choose soft drinks. Preschool children cannot join the guided tour with tasting, so check self-guided viewing conditions if bringing children.
If plans change
If arriving by 17:30 is difficult, move the museum to early afternoon on another day. Entering only the tasting hall for a drink is not an option. If you have a beer garden reservation, go just for the meal, or choose a downtown dinner option.
If tours are sold out, you can switch to paid self-guided viewing without a reservation. Skip tasting if the wait could make you miss dinner. Do not assume you can leave the museum and then reenter only the tasting hall.
During Poplar Hall’s construction period, compare availability and menus at other indoor restaurants. If all are full, eat lamb barbecue in Susukino another day and finish this day with a light dinner downtown.
Small tip
If tasting is your goal, do not arrive just before the museum’s last admission. Leave enough time to finish viewing and any tasting queue before your restaurant reservation. Return by bus, subway, or taxi on days when you drink alcohol.
Final check before departure
- Check the different requirements for self-guided visits and guided tours.
- Before setting out, calculate whether you can arrive before 17:30.
- Check party size, wait times, and reservation requirements for the beer garden separately.
- Check that you have enough time before your restaurant reservation, including the 30-minute tasting-hall limit and any wait for a seat.
- Check participants’ ages, whether anyone is driving, the tour language, and reservation cancellation conditions.
Museum admission and tasting prices and beer garden reservation information were checked on October 9, 2026. The beer garden’s Poplar Hall is scheduled to close for construction from October 25, 2026, until around mid-January 2027. Check temporary closures of the museum and each restaurant, and available reservation times for your travel date separately. Regular tours pause on Mondays, or the following Tuesday if Monday is a public holiday; the entire facility closes on December 31. Distinguish self-guided viewing days from tour operating days.
