At a glance
- Start at Jimbocho Station, using Jimbocho Book Center as your starting point. Visit Isseido Books first for books in your area of interest.
- After browsing one or two bookstores, keep only one lunch option, such as Bondy Jimbocho Main Store. If the line is long, switch to a nearby cafe instead of heading to another neighborhood for curry.
- Inventory, photography, payment, and tax-free shopping policies vary by store. Check the official store information for the book category you’re looking for and opening hours on your visit date. In person, go by what’s on the shelves.
- Books add weight quickly. Put one in your bag before deciding whether to buy more, and bring waterproof packaging if rain is forecast.
- Jimbocho Book Center focuses on new books, while Isseido is a place to look for used books. Note the title, author, or subject you’re looking for, but don’t count on finding a specific book. Plan the visit so it still works as a stroll through one or two bookstores if you don’t find what you want.
- If you plan to visit Bondy, save the exact Main Store location and entrance first. If the lunch line is long, don’t assume you can browse more books and still get a seat; follow the queue instructions. If anyone in your group can’t eat late, have curry first and return to the bookstores afterward.
- Check used books in person for underlining, notes, missing pages, and included inserts. Ask staff before opening a book to inspect a particular section. On rainy days, keep purchased books separate from a wet umbrella. If your bag gets heavy, leave the books at your hotel before sightseeing elsewhere.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Visit Jimbocho Book Center and one used bookstore that matches your interests from Jimbocho Station. Keep Bondy as your only late-lunch option. If the line is long, sort your purchases at a nearby cafe and call it a day.
Reality check
Starting and ending at Jimbocho Station helps you avoid a long walk after buying books. If your purchases get heavy, choose a subway route with fewer transfers.
Allow 45–60 minutes at each of two bookstores, 90 minutes for a late lunch and cafe break, and 30 minutes for a stroll toward Kanda from Jimbocho. Visit the bookstore with shorter hours first. If your books get heavy, shorten the stroll and return to a nearby subway station.
Set separate limits for book purchases, meals, and storage or baggage costs. Don’t buy a book just because it looks rare before checking its condition. Compare the used price at home and the weight you’ll have to carry.
For safety in bookstores, don’t turn around with a large backpack in a narrow stairway or beside stacks of used books. Ask staff for help with high shelves, and check a book’s condition together before buying. On rainy days, bring waterproof packaging instead of relying on a paper bag.
If plans change
If a bookstore is out of stock or closed, switch to a nearby publishing or cultural venue or cafe instead of traveling to another book district.
If it rains or your books get heavy, rest at a cafe and then return to a nearby station.
Small tip
Not all bookstores offer checkout assistance in other languages, tax-free shopping, or permission to take photos, and online inventory may differ from what’s available in store.
