At a glance
- Choose one main experience that fits the weather and your reservations instead of trying to do everything: a park stroll, a boat ride, the shopping streets, and a museum.
- Walk through Inokashira Park in the morning and have lunch in the shopping district. In the afternoon, visit either a reserved venue or a cafe, then take the Chuo Line back before evening rush hour.
- Crowds at the park and station can vary significantly during cherry blossom season and on weekends. Outdoor facilities such as the boats may stop running because of weather, so check same-day operating status.
- In extreme heat or rain, spend less time in the park and visit only the shopping district and an indoor venue you’ve reserved. There’s no need to push on with a walk to Mitaka.
- Instead of circling the entire pond, check the boat rental and bench locations near the entrance, then walk only as far as your energy allows. Head out of the park to the shopping streets for lunch, and keep just one place on your afternoon schedule.
- Don’t budget for the boat, a reserved venue, and a cafe as three paid activities. Spend on one main experience. Separating transit, lunch, optional admission, and drinks in your budget makes it easier to see what you’d lose if weather forces you to cancel.
- During cherry blossom season and on holidays, even getting from the station to the park entrance can take longer. If you have a timed entry for a reserved venue, allow for crowds and arrive 30 minutes early. Check boat hours again at the park.
- Don’t walk while looking at photos near the pond railing or on wet paths. Walk single file along the edge of the park where bicycles pass. Even in the shade on hot days, keep drinking water and taking breaks.
- If the boats stop running or a reserved venue is sold out, don’t extend your day to Mitaka. Keep a short park stroll and a meal in the shopping district, and on rainy days head to an indoor spot near the station.
- The park is about a 5-minute walk from Kichijoji Station’s South Park Exit, and the Sun Road arcade is in front of the North Exit. Keep the route simple by visiting the park south of the station, then heading north of the station once for lunch. You can get a feel for the park by walking just one stretch near Nanai Bridge or Benten.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
From Kichijoji Station’s South Park Exit → Inokashira Pond and Nanai Bridge → a bench break, walk about 1–2 km or less. Check same-day hours and prices before deciding whether to rent a boat.
Walk past the station to have lunch and browse shops in the Sun Road arcade to the north. Skip the narrow lanes of Harmonica Yokocho if they are crowded. If you have a Ghibli Museum reservation, plan to arrive 30 minutes before your entry time and work backward from the actual travel time from the shopping street to the museum; finish lunch and shopping earlier.
If you have a Ghibli Museum reservation, plan a separate trip toward Mitaka based on the actual route and travel time so that you arrive 30 minutes before the entry time printed on your ticket. If your reservation is early, shorten your morning in the park or your lunch. If you do not have a ticket, take a break at one Kichijoji café and return by the Chuo Line or Inokashira Line.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
From Kichijoji Station’s south exit, walk along the pond in Inokashira Park for 60–90 minutes. Then have lunch at Sun Road Shopping Street by the station’s north exit, and go to the Ghibli Museum only if you booked in advance.
Reality check
At Kichijoji Station, served by the JR Chuo Line and Keio Inokashira Line, the south exit faces the park and the north exit faces Sun Road Shopping Street. At the end, return to the station and take whichever is more convenient for your accommodation: the Chuo Line or Inokashira Line.
Allow about 90 minutes for a morning park stroll, 60 minutes for lunch in the shopping district, and 90 minutes for a reserved afternoon venue or cafe. On weekends, add 30 minutes to travel between the station and the park, and decide when to board the Chuo Line before evening rush hour.
The Inokashira Park walk and browsing Sun Road are free. The boat, zoo, and Ghibli Museum require separate paid admission; choose just one. The official guide lists adult admission to the Ghibli Museum at ¥1,000. You must book a date and time in advance through an authorized official sales channel for overseas visitors. Don’t mistake the prices on reseller sites for the standard admission fee. Transit, lunch, and drinks are extra.
Watch for bicycles along the park’s edges, and take care on wet walking paths. On hot days, drink water often, even in the shade by the pond.
If plans change
If the boats or a reserved venue are closed, keep just the park stroll and shopping district meal, and return earlier.
In extreme heat or rain, or if you’re tired from walking, see only the area near the park entrance, then move to an indoor spot in the shopping district.
Small tip
Pedestrian crowds vary significantly during cherry blossom season and on weekends, and park facility operations may change depending on the weather.
