At a glance

  • If you arrive in the morning, you may have 4–6 hours for central Tokyo or the area around your hotel. If you arrive in the evening, checking in, eating, and getting ready for the next day may be all you have time for.
  • Schedule your day trip for the second or third day, depending on the weather and reservations. For Hakone, check for transit disruptions and mountain visibility; for Nikko, temple opening hours; and for Kamakura or Yokohama, conditions for walking outdoors.
  • On departure day, add time for changing terminals, handling luggage, and crowds to the usual travel time from your hotel to the airport. Don’t plan an outlying area or a timed-entry attraction with a fee for your last day.
  • If you’d rather focus on Tokyo, use the day-trip slot for a southern area such as a museum or Odaiba, or for a neighborhood in the west. A day trip is an option that trades time in the city, not a must-do.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1

Airport → arrive at your accommodation. If you arrive before check-in, ask whether the hotel can store your bags and leave them there, then take a short walk in the same area. After checking in, have dinner near your accommodation.

Day 2

Spend a full day in eastern or western Tokyo → return to your hotel on well-lit, well-traveled streets

Day 3

Choose one: Yokohama, Hakone, Nikko, Kamakura, or another Tokyo area

Day 4

First, set the airport arrival time recommended by your airline, then work backward to allow time for transport from your accommodation to the airport, picking up your bags, and a congestion buffer. Only take a short walk in central Tokyo afterward if you have time and it is close to your accommodation. For a morning or early-afternoon flight, skip sightseeing and go straight to the airport.

How to fit it in

After booking your flights, note how many hours you’ll actually be out of your hotel each day. If you have fewer than two full 8-hour days, you’ll likely enjoy the trip more by skipping the day trip and focusing on two of Tokyo’s three areas.

Reality check

Transport

On city days, combine walking and train rides within one area. For a day trip, save the departure station, seat reservation, local bus details, and last available return service together. Don’t take large bags on a day trip; check the hotel or official luggage storage options first.

Time

Immigration and airport transfers can vary by 3–5 hours or more, and a day trip takes 8–12 hours including the round trip. On departure day, limit sightseeing in the city to 2–4 hours, counting backward from your target airport arrival time.

Cost

Calculate transit, meals, and paid attractions for two days in the city separately from the round trip, local transit, and one main admission fee for a day trip. Don’t choose a day trip based on a pass price alone; also account for the cost of any city reservations you’d have to give up that day.

Safety

Before setting out for a mountain or coastal day trip, check the weather and service disruptions. If you’ll be returning late, don’t rely on the last train. Save a target return time one or two trains earlier, along with an official taxi option.

If plans change

If the weather is bad on your day trip

Check whether the terms allow cancellation through the day before, then switch to indoor options in Tokyo, such as museums, shopping, or indoor areas at gardens. Don’t make a spontaneous trip to another faraway destination.

If arrival takes longer than expected

Drop all first-day plans. Just eat near your hotel and check your departure station for the next day. Don’t try to squeeze the missed Tokyo area into departure day.

Small tip

Keep to one fixed reservation per day. If you book a morning temple visit, afternoon observation deck, and evening show all on the same day, delays can leave you short on time for meals and breaks.

Final check before departure

  • Calculate actual sightseeing time for each flight
  • Save the change and cancellation terms for day-trip reservations
  • Work backward from your target airport arrival time and the time needed to pick up your luggage

Transit suspensions and attraction closures can affect which day your plans work best. Check official notices for each date and keep reservation terms flexible enough to swap your day trip and city days.
