At a glance

  • Brienz Rothorn Bahn station is close to Brienz station, but arrive with time to collect your ticket and join the boarding queue. If you bought a seat reservation, ticket gates open 30 minutes before departure; seats are not assigned. The earlier you enter, the easier it is for your group to sit together.
  • As the train climbs through forests and meadows, the views outside change. Instead of taking photos the whole way, spend one stretch simply watching from the window. When you reach the summit, check the clouds and wind before going into the restaurant. If visibility is good, head to the viewpoint first.
  • Berghaus Rothorn Kulm is a place to sit down for a meal at the summit. Menus and opening hours can vary by season and event, so check the restaurant’s opening status and whether you need a reservation on the official page for your visit date rather than counting on a particular dish.
  • For a summit walk, the priority is staying within easy reach of your downhill train. If this is your first visit, a short walk near the station and restaurant, looking toward both the lake and the mountains before returning, is enough. If you go farther along the ridge, check the marked route, wind, footwear, and time to turn back.

Half-day to full-day itinerary

Train times and summit restaurant hours vary by date. The times below are a flexible example. Check the Brienz Rothorn Bahn booking page and SBB again for your actual departure and return times on the same day.

1. Arrive in Brienz · 30 minutes before departure

Take an SBB train to Brienz station, then walk to Brienz Rothorn Bahn station. First choose your preferred downhill train and how long you want to spend at the summit, then pick your uphill train. A seat reservation can be useful in peak season. Ticket gates open 30 minutes before departure, and seats are unassigned, so enter then if you want to sit together as a group.

2. Steam cogwheel train uphill · about 1 hour

Take the steam cogwheel train from Brienz to Rothorn Kulm. The train may be shared between passenger groups depending on conditions, so don’t delay boarding by insisting on a window seat. On the train, check your return time and the weather again, and narrow your summit plans to two activities, such as a meal, a viewpoint, or a short walk.

The journey is part of the trip
  • Railway section climbing through forests and meadows
  • The view from the window as Lake Brienz comes into sight
3. Viewpoints at Rothorn Kulm · 30–45 minutes

When you reach the summit, check the clouds and wind first. If the view toward Lake Brienz is clear, take in the scenery and photos before your meal. If visibility is poor, it may be better to go straight to the restaurant and wait for the weather to change. Stay inside railings and away from areas beyond marked signs.

How to fit it in

A day that earns the description “some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen” is a clear one. The turquoise water of Lake Brienz, the ridgelines, and the distant Alps all come into view at once. But if the skies clear after you reach the summit, your plans may change. Secure your downhill train time first, then choose a meal and walk that fit the time you have left.

Reality check

Transport

For trains to Brienz, enter your starting point and Brienz on SBB to check connections. Then book your uphill and downhill trips separately with Brienz Rothorn Bahn. The 2026 service to Rothorn Kulm is listed as running from June 6 to October 25. Operating days and the last train can change during the season, so check the official booking page before paying.

Time

The uphill and downhill rides each take about 1 hour. Allow 30–45 minutes for the viewpoint and 45–75 minutes for a meal at the summit. If you want to add a walk, allow at least 4 hours from Brienz; a half day gives you more breathing room. Add extra time for train connections if you’re making a round trip from Interlaken or Lucerne.

Cost

Mountain railway fares and discounts vary by ticket type and date. The 2026 official booking information lists a seat reservation supplement of CHF 8 per person, and provides on-site documentation requirements for the Bernese Oberland Pass, Lucerne Travel Pass, SBB tickets, and other fares. Don’t assume your pass includes free travel; check the payment screen and applicable conditions.

Safety

Even in summer, the summit can be windy and cold, and the weather can change quickly. Bring a windproof layer, shoes with good grip, and water. Stay on marked paths. Narrow, steep paths may have rockfall, slipping, and fall hazards. If clouds, strong wind, or rain move in, skip the walk and stay near the restaurant and station.

If plans change

On a cloudy or windy day

Skip a long summit walk and keep your time near the restaurant and station short. If visibility doesn’t improve, take your planned downhill train and switch to a walk along the shore of Lake Brienz or an indoor activity.

On a day when dinner by the lake matters more than a summit meal

At the summit, focus on the viewpoint and a short walk, then head down earlier. Choose somewhere to eat in Brienz separately to avoid rushing for your downhill train because of a wait to order.

Small tip

The Rothorn in this guide is Brienzer Rothorn, reached by steam cogwheel train from Brienz—not another peak of the same name near Zermatt or Lucerne. Save “Rothorn Kulm” and “Brienz Rothorn Bahn” on your map to make sure you have the right destination.

Final check before departure

  • Check your actual connections from your starting point to Brienz on SBB.
  • Check the uphill and downhill times and 2026 operating days with Brienz Rothorn Bahn.
  • Check the seat reservation and discount pass conditions, including any on-site documentation required, on the payment screen. Arrive at Rothorn Kulm station at least 15 minutes before your return train.
  • Check whether the summit restaurant will be open and whether you need a reservation on your visit date. Leave time to be back at the station 20–30 minutes before your downhill train.
  • Bring a windproof layer, water, and shoes with good grip, and check the weather and webcam.

The operating season, departure times, seat reservations, and summit restaurant hours and menu can change with the weather, events, and booking levels. Before you leave, check operating days and your downhill train on the official Brienz Rothorn Bahn booking page. If you plan to eat, check whether Berghaus Rothorn Kulm will be open too.
