What to book before you leave
Eurail pass holders need an additional mountain-section ticket and round-trip seat reservations
For this itinerary, use a Eurail travel day from Zurich to Grindelwald Terminal, then buy discounted tickets for the mountain section.
- Zurich → Interlaken → Grindelwald TerminalEurail pass or regular ticket
If you are using Eurail, register your travel day and itinerary before boarding. If you do not have a pass, buy a ticket for this section.
- Grindelwald Terminal ↔ JungfraujochRound-trip mountain-section ticket
Select the Eurail/Interrail discount on the Jungfrau Railway checkout page. You do not need to use a Flex travel day when you are only claiming a discount, but this itinerary also includes a train ride from Zurich, so you will use a travel day.
- Grindelwald Terminal → Eigergletscher → Jungfraujoch uphill · Jungfraujoch → Eigergletscher downhillReservations for uphill and downhill time slots
From May 1 to October 31, 2026, a Priority Boarding reservation is mandatory and costs CHF 10 round trip per person. The uphill reservation includes a 15-minute Eiger Express boarding window and a seat on the connecting Eigergletscher-to-Jungfraujoch train. The downhill reservation guarantees a departure time slot for a train from Jungfraujoch. These reservations do not assign specific seat numbers.

Day itinerary
Station names are shown in their original spelling to make them easy to match with the signs on site. For connections within Zurich, follow the SBB results for your travel date. At Jungfraujoch, allow 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours for the main sights.
If your accommodation is near Kappeli, leave at 06:00 and walk about 15 minutes to Zürich Altstetten station. Check your travel-date SBB results for the arrival time at Zürich HB and the actual departure platform for IC81. Early-morning connections from Altstetten can vary by date, including route numbers and platforms.

Take IC81 from Zurich main station (Zürich HB) to Interlaken Ost. Change to a train for Grindelwald and get off at Grindelwald Terminal. From there, take the Eiger Express gondola, followed by the Jungfrau Railway.

Leave the station and take the elevator up to the Sphinx Observatory. The Aletsch Glacier is part of the view from this observatory, not a separate attraction you travel to. If you miss a connection, check SBB for the next service.
History and context
Jungfraujoch is the terminus of the railway that passes through the Eiger and Mönch mountains. The railway, conceived by Adolf Guyer-Zeller, began construction in 1896 and opened in 1912. At 3,454 m above sea level, the station is the highest railway station in Europe. The railway station is not the summit of the Jungfrau.
Food and restaurants
- If you have set aside 30 minutes for lunch, Aletsch Self, a self-service restaurant, is a convenient choice. It serves dishes such as lasagna and rice bowls. Check the menu on site for prices of hot drinks and food.
- Crystal serves Swiss and international dishes, while Bollywood offers Indian and vegetarian options. If you would like rösti or sausage, check the day’s menu first. Bringing water and snacks gives you time to rest even when the restaurants are busy.

Travel, costs, and what to bring
Round-trip travel from Zurich alone takes about 8 hours. This itinerary sets aside a full day for Jungfraujoch, so it is difficult to add another mountain attraction on the same day.
The example takes 10 hours 56 minutes from departure at Zurich main station to return. From accommodation near Kappeli, allow about 12 hours 25 minutes including walks and local public transportation to and from the station. Sightseeing at Jungfraujoch takes 2 hours 54 minutes, from arrival at 11:11 until returning to the gate at 14:05; this includes meals and walking.
Add together the regular train fare (or Eurail travel day), the discounted round-trip mountain-section fare, reservation fees, and food costs to estimate your budget. Mountain-section prices vary by starting point, season, and discount eligibility, so check the total on the official booking page.
Walk slowly at 3,454 m above sea level. If you develop a headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual shortness of breath, stop sightseeing, ask staff for help, and descend. If you have a heart or lung condition, talk with a medical professional before your trip. Even in summer, bring a warm outer layer, shoes with good traction, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
If the weather is poor or you are short on time
Visit the indoor exhibitions and Ice Palace first instead. If the forecast is already poor before you leave, check the change and refund conditions for your tickets and reservations, and consider changing your visit date.
If you miss an uphill connection, first check the next train and whether your mountain reservation can be changed. At Jungfraujoch, shorten your meal or shopping stop. If you feel unwell, make getting back down your priority.
Small tip
Check the official day-of information for opening hours at the Sphinx Observatory, Ice Palace, and restaurants. Wheelchair users should check accessibility information for the Eiger Express route. Check snow and ice conditions separately before going out to the Plateau.
Final check before departure
- Check connections for Altstetten, Zürich HB, Interlaken, and Kappeli, as well as attraction opening hours, for your actual travel date.
- Arrange a mountain-section ticket and Priority Boarding reservations for the uphill journey from Grindelwald Terminal (Eiger Express boarding window and connecting train) and the downhill journey from Jungfraujoch.
- Check the summit webcams and gondola service on the day you leave.
- Save your Eurail pass and reservation QR codes for offline access, and bring water, snacks, and warm clothing.
The minute-by-minute schedule in this guide is an example. Train, platform, and bus numbers, as well as connection times, may vary by travel date. Check SBB Mobile and the Jungfrau Railways timetable again for your travel date before departure.
