At a glance

  • If you try to visit all five villages in one day, you’ll spend much of your time on platforms and stairs.
  • Choose accommodation based first on luggage handling and train access, rather than the romance of staying inside a village.
  • Coastal trails can change with the weather and opening conditions, so check their status locally.
  • The Via dell’Amore is one-way from Riomaggiore to Manarola and requires a reservation for a 30-minute entry slot. Check the official sales page for a card that includes access or an add-on entry product. Don’t assume access is automatically included with a standard card; check the card type against your reservation confirmation. A long mountain hike and an entry slot for this short path are separate options.

Reality check

Transport

If you are staying in La Spezia, take regional trains from La Spezia Centrale to reach Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, and Monterosso. Allow about 15–20 minutes by train from La Spezia to Manarola and 5–10 minutes from Vernazza to Monterosso, but check the actual trains with Trenitalia. Validate individual paper tickets at a station machine before boarding. Trenitalia digital regional tickets are validated automatically at the scheduled departure time of the selected train. Check the park’s sales page for the selected date and coverage of the Cinque Terre Train Card, and what card format you need to show during ticket inspection. The Train Card covers regional trains from La Spezia Migliarina to Levanto; intercity high-speed train tickets are separate.

Time

Allow 1–2 hours in each of two villages, plus an hour for lunch. If you choose the open Vernazza–Monterosso trail, allow about 2 hours and extra time for water and breaks; don’t add another village that afternoon. To avoid stairs and uphill climbs, take the train for the same journey. If you have an early long-distance train on day three, collect your bags and head to the station instead of visiting another village.

Cost

Enter the same visit date to compare the total cost of the official park cards and individual Trenitalia tickets. If you take three trains in one day—La Spezia to Vernazza, Vernazza to Monterosso, and Monterosso to La Spezia—compare the cost of three individual train tickets with the price of a one-day Train Card. If you hike the Vernazza–Monterosso trail, individual train tickets do not include the trail fee, so check the Trekking Card or the Train Card’s trail coverage for that date and add the applicable cost. A Trekking Card alone does not let you ride the trains. Reserve a time slot for Via dell’Amore, and check whether admission is included with the card or product you choose. If it is included, do not add the same admission fee twice. Do not include meals, lodging, or intercity rail in the card price.

Safety

Trails can be slippery after rain and may be closed. The national park’s official English-language hiker guide prohibits open shoes and smooth soles. It requires shoes that are closed, waterproof, cover the ankle, and have nonslip soles. Before setting out, check the park’s current footwear rules and whether your chosen route is open.

If plans change

Alternative if coastal paths are closed

Don’t cross barriers. Take regional trains and choose two villages for their viewpoints and harbors.

Alternative for crowded or delayed trains

Skip the plan to visit all five villages and make just one train trip between your current village and your accommodation base.

Small tip

Dragging a large suitcase up village stairs can take the pleasure out of your stay. Check the route to your accommodation on a map first.

Final check before departure

  • Check same-day trail openings on the park website.
  • Save notices about regional train works and the last trains.
  • Bring shoes for stairs and water, and leave large bags at your accommodation.
  • Check coastal path openings and hours separately from the train schedule. If a path is closed, don’t climb over barriers; take the train to the next village and set a departure time from your last village that leaves you enough time to return.

The park may restrict or close paths because of weather, safety inspections, maintenance, or crowds. The Via dell’Amore requires a reservation. Before departure, check trail status and reservation requirements on the park’s card page, then adjust your itinerary to focus on trains.
