At a glance
- Day-use bathing works well when sightseeing is the main focus and the hot spring is a final stop. An overnight stay is better if you want to take your time over dinner and breakfast. Compare the total cost of admission and round-trip transport from Tokyo with the cost of lodging, two meals, and luggage storage.
- For a day trip, visit only one or two sights, check when the public bath stops accepting guests, soak, then return to Tokyo. If you want a private bath, first check whether you can reserve one separately. For an overnight stay, leave your bags before check-in; you can stay in the hot spring area through the next morning. Plan your sightseeing order around the dinner cutoff on arrival day and checkout the next day.
- Tattoo policies, children’s hours, and areas reserved for overnight guests vary by facility. Day-use hours and admission cutoffs may differ from the hours for overnight guests. Check the selected facility’s official information before booking.
- If mountain transport stops running, skip the sightseeing loop and keep your plans near Hakone-Yumoto. If no indoor facilities are available, head to Odawara and secure your return transport first.
- A specific day-use option is Hakone Yuryo (箱根湯寮). It’s about 3 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto Station by free shuttle, so it suits a relaxing day near the station better than a day that includes the lake and ropeway. For ryokans, compare actual date-specific quotes from places such as Hotel Hatsuhana, which publish details about meal-inclusive stays, public baths, and in-room baths.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
In the morning, travel from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. After lunch near the station, spend 2–3 hours bathing and resting at Hakone Yuryo’s public bath. If you choose a private bath, check the separate reservation requirement and the two-hour usage limit. Take the shuttle bus back to the station and board the Tokyo-bound train you have secured.
Don’t schedule baths at two facilities. Arrive at your ryokan by the time specified for check-in and dinner, at the latest. After breakfast the next day, take one short walk, then head back.
Compare age and tattoo restrictions for public baths, as well as reservation and bathing conditions for private baths. Children below elementary school age cannot use the public baths at Hakone Yuryo, so if you’re traveling with young children, check the separate conditions for lodging facilities or private baths.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
For a day trip, visit one or two sights in the morning, relax at a booked hot spring for about 2 hours, then return to Tokyo. For an overnight stay, leave your luggage before check-in and arrive with plenty of time before dinner service ends. The natural flow is to use the hot spring until the next morning, then travel to another area.
Reality check
For the Shinjuku–Hakone-Yumoto trip, check the travel time for the specific Odakyu Romancecar service you plan to book and allow about 1 hour 30 minutes. The regular ticket and the limited express ticket are sold separately. Hakone Yuryo, a day-use bathing facility, offers a free shuttle bus that takes about 3 minutes between the station and the facility, but allow extra time for waiting and road traffic. The candidate hotel, Hotel Hatsuhana, is about 10 minutes from the station. According to its official information, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. you must call the hotel when you arrive at the station to request the free shuttle car. It does not run on a fixed schedule, so allow time for waiting when planning to arrive for dinner. If you cannot use the shuttle, check the hotel’s official access information for the bus direction, boarding stop, alighting stop, and route from the stop to the hotel for your visit date. If you cannot confirm these details, take a taxi. Allow extra time for shuttle waits and travel to the station when planning for the lodging’s dinner cutoff and your return limited express train.
For a day trip, leave 2–3 hours for bathing after accounting for round-trip travel from Tokyo and local transport, so you don’t have to rush. For an overnight stay, plan to enjoy the baths and meals from check-in through the next morning, and allow a 30–60-minute buffer in case buses or trains stop running. If mountain transport is suspended, skip the sightseeing loop.
According to Hakone Yuryo’s official price list on 2026-10-03, its public bath costs ¥1,700–¥1,800 for adults on weekdays and ¥2,000–¥2,200 on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, depending on the date and season. Check the calendar price for your visit date. Towels are not available for rent; buying them adds ¥300 for a face towel and ¥550 for a bath towel. When comparing the day-use bathing fee with a one-night ryokan estimate, add round-trip transportation from the same starting point, limited express tickets, and any meals not included to both totals. Private baths are priced per room for two hours, not per person bathing, so check the official price for the room you choose separately.
On mountain routes, check service suspension notices for safety and avoid risky transfers to catch the last train or bus. If you feel dizzy or dehydrated while bathing, leave the bath and rest right away. Don’t bathe after drinking alcohol.
If plans change
If your booked facility is closed or has stopped admitting day visitors, check the official information once for facilities near Hakone-Yumoto that are still open. If none meet your needs, skip the bath and choose an indoor activity in Odawara or an earlier return as an alternative. Check cancellation fees directly with the booking provider.
If mountain transport stops or you’re tired, rest near Hakone-Yumoto, then head to Odawara for your return trip.
Small tip
Tattoo policies, children’s hours, towel rentals, and what meals are included vary by facility. Even if you can visit for day-use bathing without a reservation, admission may close early when the facility reaches capacity, so check the official information.
Final check before departure
- Before you leave, check official Hakone hot spring operating hours and booking conditions
