At a glance

  • Stir-fried vegetables, tofu, and noodles may still be made with chicken stock, oyster sauce, shrimp, or pork lard. If you’re vegan, also say that you avoid eggs, dairy, and honey, and ask about sauces and cooking oil. Don’t choose based only on a picture of vegetables on the menu.
  • If you’re visiting Diamond Hill, consider Chi Lin Vegetarian at Longmen House in Nan Lian Garden. The tourism board recommends making a reservation on weekends. When booking, ask again about the menu and prices for your mealtime, and whether dishes contain eggs or dairy.
  • If you’re in Central, save Sangeetha Vegetarian’s The Center location (Shop 5A, 99 Queen’s Road Central; listed as 1/F in local floor notation) as an option. In Tsim Sha Tsui, save Woodlands, listed with the Hong Kong Tourism Board at Shops 16–17, UG Floor, Wing On Plaza, as another. Check both locations’ hours on your visit date and confirm that they have dishes for your dietary needs. Choose an option in the area where you’ll be today so you don’t have to cross the city if one Diamond Hill restaurant is closed.

How to fit it in

In the morning, check the hours of vegetarian restaurants in the area you’ll be visiting that day. Reserve a table at a specialty restaurant for lunch or arrive early. For dinner, use an option near your accommodation so you don’t have to cross the city just to eat.

Reality check

Transport

From MTR Diamond Hill Station, walk into Nan Lian Garden to reach Chi Lin Vegetarian. Combine the meal with a temple visit in the same half-day. If the meal there isn’t your main reason for visiting, prioritize a restaurant in the area where you already are or near your accommodation.

Time

Allow 10 minutes to check the menu and ingredients, plus 45–60 minutes to eat. Without a weekend reservation, the wait could make the visit take 90 minutes or more, so don’t schedule it too close to your sightseeing start time.

Cost

Even at a vegetarian restaurant, the total depends on the dishes, set menus, tea, and service charge. HK$100–200 per meal is a planning budget, not an official price. Check menu prices and extra charges before ordering, then decide whether to share several dishes or get individual set meals.

Safety

If you have a severe allergy, don’t eat food if the staff can’t explain its ingredients and cross-contact risks. A vegetarian label does not guarantee that food is safe for people with allergies. Bring familiar alternatives and any medication you need, and don’t take a chance on a sauce you don’t know.

If plans change

If the specialty restaurant is closed or fully booked

In Central, check the same-day hours and menu at Sangeetha Vegetarian; in Tsim Sha Tsui, check Woodlands instead. In another area, identify a vegetarian restaurant near your accommodation and packaged food with an ingredient label ahead of time. Keep a visit to Nan Lian Garden separate from a meal reservation.

If a regular restaurant can’t confirm its ingredients

Go to packaged food with an ingredient label or a specialty restaurant with clear menu descriptions. If you have a severe allergy, don’t order based on an unclear answer.

Small tip

Show staff this question: “I do not eat meat, fish, seafood, meat stock, oyster sauce or lard. Does this dish contain any of these?” and check their answer. If you’re vegan, add: “I also do not eat eggs, dairy or honey.” If you have allergies, also ask whether there could be cross-contact from cooking utensils or frying oil, as well as about the ingredients.

Final check before departure

  • Save a sentence that clearly lists your restrictions, such as meat, seafood, eggs, or dairy.
  • Check closing days and reservations at restaurants in today’s area and near your accommodation.
  • Prepare questions about prices, service charge, and allergy cross-contact.

Check Chi Lin Vegetarian’s actual opening hours and reservation availability for your visit date. Not every dish at a vegetarian restaurant is vegan; ask again about ingredients and preparation when ordering.
