Replace outdoor stops with one indoor visit
Half a day on a rainy day
How long you spend depends on your interests. Allow 2–3 hours for a quick visit, or half a day if you want to focus on a particular artist and see a special exhibition.
From Zürich HB, take tram 3 or bus 31 directly to the Kunsthaus stop. Check ZVV or SBB for service on your travel date.
- Kunsthaus stop
- Check the day’s exhibitions at the entrance at Heimplatz 1
See Alberto Giacometti’s sculptures, paintings, and drawings first, then choose an area of the Impressionist or Classical Modern collection that interests you. The Kunsthaus covers more than 800 years of art, so you don’t need to see everything in one visit.

- One area of Impressionist or Classical Modern art
If you’re visiting for a special exhibition, first check whether it’s included in your ticket and leave enough time for it. To take a break outside the galleries, check the day’s hours for the museum café or restaurant.
- Special exhibition ticket coverage
- After your break, visit one more gallery that interests you
If the rain is light, take a short walk from Heimplatz toward the Old Town and Bellevue. If it keeps raining, spend more time in the museum or take a tram to a café or your accommodation to limit time outdoors.
- Take a short Old Town walk only if the rain is light
- If it’s raining hard, take a tram

If you want to see Giacometti, start on the second floor of the Chipperfield Building. Check the day’s visitor guide for the locations of Impressionist, Classical Modern, and Munch works. Choose two or three periods that interest you instead of trying to see every gallery.
Reality check
Trams 3, 8, and 9 and bus 31 stop at the Kunsthaus. From Zürich HB, you can take tram 3 or bus 31 without transferring.
Allow 2–3 hours for the collection, or around 4 hours if you’re including a special exhibition and a break. Thursday’s later closing time can work well with an evening itinerary.
Adult tickets for the collection and smaller exhibitions currently cost CHF 24; special exhibitions may cost extra. When you buy online, the audio guide for the collection is free. Check the official ticket page for current exhibitions, discounts, and free admission conditions.
Food and drinks aren’t allowed in the galleries. Leave backpacks, umbrellas, and large bags in the lockers, and keep your distance from the artworks.
If plans change
See Giacometti and one area of the collection that interests you; save the special exhibition for another visit.
Check the official opening hours and choose another indoor venue. Don’t travel to the museum first.
