At a glance
- Walk 5.4 km from Woljeongsa Iljumun Gate to Dongpigol, then 3.6 km to Sangwonsa. Retracing the same path gives a calculated 18 km round trip, which this guide does not recommend.
- For the full one-way walk, contact the Pyeongchang Tourism and Culture Foundation's designated tourist taxi agency at least 3 days before travel. Confirm and reserve a drop-off at Woljeongsa Iljumun Gate, pickup at Sangwonsa Parking Area, and finish at Jinbu Station. If this route cannot be guaranteed, shorten the plan to an out-and-back walk in Woljeongsa's fir forest.
- Public transportation requires traveling from Jinbu Station to Jinbu Intercity Bus Terminal, then changing to bus 225 or 226 toward Woljeongsa and Sangwonsa. It is not a direct service from Jinbu Station to Woljeongsa. The Sangwonsa timetable does not clearly distinguish arrival from turnaround departure, so use a reserved vehicle as the default pickup after completing the one-way walk.
- A wild greens set meal offers different aromas and textures across several side dishes, with potato pancakes or acorn jelly as good accompaniments. The restaurant area at 83 Odaesan-ro is not in front of Sangwonsa; after pickup, head down toward Jinbu to eat.

Before choosing a route
Do not use it as an early finish unless you have confirmed permitted vehicle access and an official boarding point.
The fir forest trail is a separate walk around Woljeongsa, not a miniature version of the 9 km route.
Day by day
Jinbu and Seonjaegil Trail in 2 days and 1 night
The times below are an editorial itinerary example with room for rest and the return trip. They do not guarantee actual train or bus departure times or journey lengths. Finalize your plan against booking screens and with your driver.
Confirm vehicle pickup conditions at least 3 days before travel. On the first day, travel from Seoul to Jinbu and stay overnight, visiting only Woljeongsa Museum after checking that it is open. Include museum transportation in your reserved vehicle's operating area and schedule.
Second-day example: leave Woljeongsa Iljumun Gate at 08:30, aim to reach Sangwonsa between 12:00 and 13:00, and book your pickup for 13:30. This adds breaks and sightseeing to the official 3 hours 30 minutes. Agree with the driver on contact and waiting arrangements if delayed, then eat toward Jinbu after pickup. Aim to reach Jinbu Station at 15:30 and book your Seoul-bound train after 16:30. Cancel the 9 km one-way walk if the vehicle provider cannot guarantee these conditions.

This suits people who want a long day walking through waterside foliage and forest. If you do not normally walk for more than an hour or two, have knee pain, or are traveling with small children, choose a separate walk confined to the fir forest trail.
Reality check
The full one-way Seonjaegil Trail is best planned with a reserved pickup. Book the Pyeongchang Tourism and Culture Foundation tourist taxi through its designated agency at least 3 days before travel. Each vehicle takes 2-4 people, operates within Pyeongchang County, and includes meal and waiting time. When booking, secure a commitment to Jinbu Station → Woljeongsa Iljumun Gate drop-off → Sangwonsa Parking Area pickup → Jinbu Station, plus an alternative meeting point if access is restricted. Without that commitment, shorten the plan to Woljeongsa's fir forest out and back.
The official walking-only figure is 9 km one way, about 3 hours 30 minutes. Add breaks, temple visits, pickup waiting, and travel to Jinbu.
Budget separately for Seoul-Jinbu round-trip transportation, Jinbu-Woljeongsa access, Sangwonsa pickup, lodging, meals and snacks, parking, and admission.
A gentle gradient does not make 9 km short. During torrential rain, rising valley water, or closures, do not choose even a short fir forest walk.
If plans change
Cancel the full Seonjaegil Trail walk and visit only Woljeongsa and its fir forest trail. Also change your reserved pickup arrangements.
Switch to Woljeongsa Museum after confirming it is open that day. If closed, head home from Jinbu earlier.
Small tip
At Dongpigol, 3.6 km remain to Sangwonsa, while returning to Woljeongsa means 5.4 km. Dongpigol is a distance checkpoint, not an automatic exit.
Final check before departure
- Check Odaesan trail restrictions, rainfall, and valley conditions.
- Save your arrival service to Woljeongsa, pickup from Sangwonsa, and taxi contact details.
- Check shoes, a waterproof outer layer, water, snacks, a power bank, and sunset.
- Check restaurant hours and visitor facilities' opening hours and closed days, then finalize the itinerary around your actual return service.
The official sections are Woljeongsa Iljumun Gate-Dongpigol, 5.4 km and 2 hours 10 minutes, and Dongpigol-Sangwonsa, 3.6 km and 1 hour 20 minutes. Do not assume you can board a vehicle anywhere at Dongpigol. Confirm vehicle access and the designated boarding point beforehand.
