At a glance

  • Warm up on the walk to Sinheungsa, then follow the gentle valley-side path to Waseondae. Between Waseondae and Biseondae, stone steps alternate with boardwalks, so stop walking when looking at the scenery.
  • When booking from Seoul, choose either Sokcho Express Bus Terminal or Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal as your arrival point. Sokcho City's buses 7 and 7-1 run toward Seoraksan, and the stop at the mountain entrance is Seoraksan Sogongwon. On the first day, ask the terminal information desk to identify both your actual boarding stop and next day's return stop.
  • Abai sundae is pork large intestine stuffed with glutinous rice, vegetables, and other ingredients, then steamed. Squid sundae is also well known. Eat these in downtown Sokcho after traveling by vehicle or bus, rather than in Seorak-dong.
  • Budget separately for Seoul-Sokcho buses, Sokcho-Seorak-dong transportation, lodging, parking and on-site facilities, meals, and hiking snacks.

Follow the valley from Sogongwon to Biseondae and back

This conceptual diagram shows the relationship between the start, intermediate stops, and turnaround. For safe mountain routes, follow the park service map and on-site signs rather than Google directions.

See the travel guidance for each stop below.

  1. Seoraksan Sogongwon Start and return

Check that day's closures and entry hours.

  2. Sinheungsa Mountain temple

Set a sightseeing time limit, then continue along the valley trail.

  3. Waseondae Check your pace

If tired, return the same way from here.

  4. Biseondae Turnaround

Enjoy the rock faces and valley without extending toward Geumganggul.

  5. Abai Village Meal

After the walk, travel into downtown Sokcho for a sundae meal.

Before choosing a route

Keep the areas distinct

Do not combine Biseondae in Seorak-dong and Jujeongol in Osaek, Yangyang, into the same day's route.

Turnaround point

Rest at Biseondae and return the same way, without adding Geumganggul.

Day by day

2 days and 1 night in Sokcho

The times below are an editorial itinerary example with room for rest and the return trip. They do not guarantee actual train or bus departure times or journey lengths. Finalize your plan against booking screens and with your driver.

Day 1 · Downtown Sokcho

On the first day, travel from Seoul to the Sokcho terminal you booked and stay overnight. For the afternoon, choose either Sokcho Municipal Museum or Abai Village. Confirm the next day's Sogongwon-bound boarding stop and return direction on the first day.

Day 2 · Biseondae out and back

Second-day example: leave Sogongwon at 09:00, aim to reach Biseondae by 10:30, and return to Sogongwon at 12:30. If photographs or breaks delay arrival at Biseondae, turn back without continuing farther. Allow 13:00-14:30 for travel into downtown Sokcho and lunch, and keep 14:30-16:00 free for traffic and collecting luggage. Choose a Seoul-bound seat departing Sokcho after 17:00, and finalize it after securing your return from Sogongwon. These are recommended time allowances, not actual bus departures.

This suits regular walkers who prefer a gentler valley trail to a steep summit hike. If you need mobility assistance, do not assume the entire 3 km is accessible; ask the support center how far you can go.

Reality check

Transport

When booking from Seoul, select either Sokcho Express or Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal as your destination. Sokcho City's buses 7 and 7-1 head toward Seoraksan, and the entrance stop is Seoraksan Sogongwon. Ask the information desk at your arrival terminal on the first day for the exact boarding location and direction. On arrival at Sogongwon, also obtain your return stop and the timetable for departures from Seoraksan. The posted 15:36, 16:10, and 16:44 departures are candidate examples, not a guarantee of service on your travel date. If connections do not fit, use a reserved round-trip vehicle between the terminal and Sogongwon.

Time

The official 1 hour 20 minutes one way gives a calculated round-trip walking time of about 2 hours 40 minutes. Set aside half a day for Sinheungsa, photographs, breaks, and crowds.

Cost

Add up round-trip Seoul buses, Sokcho-Seorak-dong transportation, lodging, parking and facilities, meals, water, and snacks separately.

Safety

Stones under fallen leaves and wet rocks are slippery. During heavy rain or closures, do not choose even a shorter valley walk as an alternative.

If plans change

Light rain with the trail open

Do not aim for Biseondae; visit only Sinheungsa and return.

Heavy rain, closures, or early fatigue

Cancel the hike or turn back at Waseondae or Sinheungsa. You can keep only the downtown Sokcho portion and head back to Seoul earlier.

Small tip

Walk Sogongwon → Sinheungsa → Waseondae → Biseondae, without going beyond the Geumganggul junction. Searching for Osaek Parking Area will take you to a different area.

Final check before departure

  • Check park service closures and Seoraksan weather.
  • Check round-trip Seoul seats and your first connection and return service between Sokcho and Seorak-dong.
  • Check sunset and pack a waterproof outer layer, shoes with traction, water, and snacks.
  • Check restaurant hours and visitor facilities' opening hours and closed days, then finalize the itinerary around your actual return service.

This guide covers only Sogongwon-Biseondae in Seorak-dong, Sokcho. Its starting point and transportation differ from Jujeongol in Osaek, Yangyang. Geumganggul beyond Biseondae is a separate section with steep metal stairs.
