At a glance
- The usual route from Zurich is Zurich main station–Bern–Spiez–Kandersteg. Depending on connections, you may also find an option with just one transfer at Spiez after passing through Bern. Train travel generally takes 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes, but schedules can change on construction days.
- From Lucerne, take the Luzern–Bern–Spiez–Kandersteg route. Train travel alone takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on connections, so it’s a long day just like the trip from Zurich.
- The official walking time from Kandersteg station to the gondola valley station is about 10–15 minutes; the gondola ride takes about 8 minutes. From the mountain station, it’s about 20 minutes directly to the lake, or about 25 minutes on the gentler alternative path.
- During the 2026 peak season, June 15–September 21, the regular adult round-trip gondola fare is CHF 40. Eurail is not listed among the discounts on the official Oeschinen site, so Eurail pass holders should budget for the regular fare.

How to fit it in
This is a long day trip best suited to travelers who can leave during the 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. hour and are prepared for about 6 hours of round-trip travel alone. If you plan to leave later or hike for a long time at the lake, it’s better to stay overnight in Kandersteg or the Bernese Oberland.
Reality check
On a valid Eurail travel day, regular trains between Zurich or Lucerne and Kandersteg are included at no extra fare. The gondola is not free or discounted with Eurail; you need a separate ticket and an uphill time slot.
Allow about 3 hours to 3 hours 20 minutes each way from Zurich, and around 3 hours from Lucerne depending on connections. To spend 4 hours at the lake, plan for an 11–13-hour day overall.
From June 15 to September 21, 2026, the adult round-trip gondola fare is CHF 40. Using a Eurail travel day means no extra fare for long-distance trains, but follow your pass conditions for seat reservations and trains that require reservations. Gondola tickets for 2 people cost CHF 80; recalculate the currency conversion based on the payment date.
The lake is about 1,578 m above sea level, and temperatures are lower than in the city. For safety, avoid high-altitude viewpoint trails after strong winds, rain, or snow, and follow official trail closures and gondola suspensions.
If plans change
Choose another date or switch to a walk in the Kandersteg valley rather than waiting without a reservation. An uphill reservation is required from June 20 to September 20.
Don’t push ahead with the long round trip. Switch to a city day in Bern or Lucerne, or a low-altitude outing around Lake Thun.
Instead of a day trip from Zurich or Lucerne, stay overnight in Kandersteg, Spiez, or Interlaken to have more time at the lake in the morning.
Small tip
Search for Kandersteg as your destination in SBB first. From the station, walk to the valley station of the Gondelbahn Kandersteg-Oeschinensee, then continue from the gondola’s mountain station down to the lake.
