At a glance
- Olten is an important transfer point in the Swiss railway network, but its old town is small. Expect a calm atmosphere along the Aare and in everyday neighborhood streets, rather than the concentration of attractions you’d find in a major tourist city.
- Alte Holzbrücke is a covered wooden bridge built in 1803. On the other side, you’ll find the medieval Stadtturm clock tower and streets of the old town.
- Haus der Museen brings together natural history, history, and archaeology exhibits. It’s at least a 10-minute walk from the station and closed on Mondays, so check opening hours first if you’re on a short transfer.
- The walk toward Sälischlössli is a separate uphill route. The official guide says it takes about 1 hour 30 minutes each way from the station to the nearby Alt-Wartburg ruins, so allow at least 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours, including a rest.

Follow the river from Ildefonsplatz back to the station. Retrieve your luggage and check your platform when you arrive. Don’t stop at a café on the 90-minute transfer route. If you don’t think you’ll be back at the station by minute 70, shorten the riverside section.

With a 90-minute transfer, finish the walk, including luggage storage and your return to the station, within 65–70 minutes. Leave the final 20–25 minutes to retrieve your bags and get to the platform. If you want to walk for a full 90 minutes, your total transfer must be at least 110 minutes. Add time inside the museum only if you have at least 3 hours in total.
Reality check
Olten station has frequent connections, but allow time for using a locker, getting to your platform, and possible train delays. The walking route is a loop that starts and ends at the station. If your next train changes, shorten the route.
The 90-minute transfer route, viewing the museum from outside, takes 65–70 minutes including luggage storage and the return to the station. Keep the remaining 20–25 minutes for boarding. For a 90-minute walk, allow at least 110 minutes for the full transfer; to visit Haus der Museen, allow at least 3 hours total. If you’re walking toward Sälischlössli and Alt-Wartburg, set aside at least 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours separately.
Walking through the old town and along the river is free. As of the 2026 check, admission to Haus der Museen costs CHF 5 for adults; lockers and cafés cost extra.
The wooden bridge and riverside paths can be slippery in rain or icy conditions. Don’t hike toward Sälischlössli carrying luggage, and walk that route only in daylight.
If plans change
Finish storing your luggage and walking to the wooden bridge and clock tower and back within 35–40 minutes. Keep the last 20 minutes for the station and platform. If using a locker or waiting at crossings takes longer, turn back at the wooden bridge and skip the museum and café.
If Haus der Museen is open, switch to the exhibits and shorten the riverside walk. If it’s Monday, stick to the café near the station and the wooden bridge.
If the weather and your shoes are suitable, consider a separate round trip toward Sälischlössli and Alt-Wartburg. Don’t try to squeeze it into the short town loop.
Small tip
Google Maps estimates don’t include photo stops, cafés, or waiting at crossings. If you have only a 90-minute transfer, see Haus der Museen from the outside and return directly to the river from Ildefonsplatz.
Final check before departure
- Save your next train’s platform and departure time in the SBB app.
- Check whether lockers at Olten station can accommodate your larger bags.
- Check Monday closures and Haus der Museen’s opening hours, 10:00–17:00.
- Keep the full walking route below open in Google Maps for offline reference.
Haus der Museen is open Tuesday–Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays. Sälischlössli is not a viewpoint near the station, so don’t include it in a 1–2-hour transfer; check the day’s weather and walking time again.
