Reality check
The train journey from Zurich to Rhine Falls takes around 1 hour, but transfers and direct connections vary by date and time. Enter your departure point and either the North or South Bank destination in SBB to compare actual connections.
Allow half a day, including the round trip, if you’re visiting just one side. Allow about 4–5 hours for the North and South Banks plus the short loop. If you add a boat ride or the 7 km long loop, about 5–6 hours is more comfortable.
The basin by Schlössli Wörth on the North Bank is free. Schloss Laufen’s Historama and viewing platforms are currently listed at CHF 5 for adults, but check the official information for your visit date for current prices and what’s included. Boat rides cost extra.
The edge of the falls and walking paths can be slippery when wet or after rain. Stay behind the railings and wear shoes with good grip. Follow the operator’s boarding instructions if you take a boat.
If plans change
Get off directly at Neuhausen Rheinfall or Schloss Laufen, focus on the views from one side, and return. Choose the roughly 18-minute walk from Neuhausen SBB station to the basin only if you want the extra walk.
Cut back on the short and long loops, and check whether indoor facilities and viewpoints on the North and South Banks are open. It’s more comfortable to take an earlier return train.
Small tip
The falls site itself is accessible 24 hours a day year-round, but boats, restaurants, elevators, and viewing facilities have seasonal and weather-dependent schedules. If you use a stroller or wheelchair, first check elevator access at Neuhausen Rheinfall station and accessibility on the side you plan to visit.
