At a glance

  • Start with the corridors and courtyards in both buildings, then choose just two or three shops that interest you. If you’re not planning to buy design goods, the space and a short exhibition can still fill 45 minutes.
  • The general hours listed for studios and shops are 12:00–19:00, though individual hours may vary. Don’t confuse being able to see the area around the buildings in the morning with the shops being open.
  • Paid workshops are separate from general admission. Before booking, check the language, duration, and whether you can take home what you make that day. You don’t need to assume that a time-slot reservation is required for a simple visit.
  • Jot down the floor and unit numbers of shops you’re interested in so you don’t have to go back and forth between the two buildings. Leave large bags at your hotel and visit only the floors you need.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

PMQ after lunch

Courtyard → corridors in both buildings → two or three design shops of your choice

Head west

Hollywood Road → exterior and worship areas of Man Mo Temple

Return to the city

Main road in Sheung Wan → snack or MTR

How to fit it in

Head uphill to PMQ from Sheung Wan or Central and explore the buildings and shops, then walk west along Hollywood Road. This afternoon route includes a rest in front of Man Mo Temple before heading downhill to Sheung Wan MTR station.

Reality check

Transport

PMQ is at 35 Aberdeen Street. Take Central’s Mid-Levels Escalator up to Hollywood Road, then walk west to cut down on the long uphill stretch. The final section still includes outdoor paths and slopes.

Time

Allow about 90 minutes: 20 minutes for PMQ’s corridors and courtyards, 30–40 minutes for shops, and 30 minutes to continue along Hollywood Road to Man Mo Temple. Add the workshop duration separately if you’ve booked one.

Cost

You don’t have to buy anything to walk through the public areas. Exhibition and workshop fees vary by event. Set aside HK$40–70 for a drink, plus a separate souvenir budget, and compare prices after checking the tags. These are planning estimates.

Safety

In the corridors, avoid blocking work areas in front of doors and ask before taking photos. The stone steps on Hollywood Road can be slippery in the rain, so take the main road instead. At Man Mo Temple, watch out for incense smoke and follow the flow of worshippers.

If plans change

When design shops are closed

Take a quick look around PMQ, then head downhill to Central Market. If you were hoping to shop, come back another day after noon.

During heavy rain

Skip the walk along Hollywood Road and rest inside PMQ or take a taxi to the station. The covered corridors don’t extend across the whole city.

Small tip

If there are no pop-ups and more than half the shops are closed, spend 30 minutes on the architecture and move on. If you’re here for a walk along Hollywood Road rather than shopping at PMQ, there’s no need to revisit floors with closed shops.

Final check before departure

  • Check whether the shops you’re interested in are closed and whether they open after 12:00.
  • If you choose a workshop, check the booking details, language, and end time.
  • Save the route downhill from PMQ to Sheung Wan station and a travel option for rainy weather.

Check the hours for the specific shop you plan to visit in PMQ’s official shop directory, and review the monthly events calendar. The general 09:00–23:00 hours listed for cafés and restaurants don’t necessarily apply to every individual venue.
