At a glance

  • See the gardens and views from upper Petřín, then walk downhill through Malá Strana and Kampa. Do not try to fit an interior visit to Prague Castle into the same half day.
  • The funicular has been carrying passengers since September 22, 2026. Check service and wait times on the day of your trip. If it is unavailable, take a tram to Pohořelec.
  • If walking uphill, decide your downhill route and account for sunset time first.
  • If it rains, visit only Kampa and the lanes of Malá Strana, and save the hill for another day.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Morning

At Újezd, take the funicular to Petřín station and walk along the edge of the park. If service is suspended or the wait is long, take tram 22 or 23 to reach Pohořelec.

Afternoon

Avoid the steep, slippery slope toward Nebozízek and walk down at an easy pace toward Malostranské náměstí, Kampa, and the west end of Charles Bridge.

Rain or snow

Skip the hill and keep to indoor sights in Malá Strana and the flat stretch along the Kampa riverbank.

How to fit it in

After coming down from Petřín, this half-day route works better if you continue with a walk through the gardens of Malá Strana and Kampa than with another indoor visit. Set aside separate time for the interior of Prague Castle.

Reality check

Transport

Újezd stop is served by trams 9, 12, 15, 20, 22, and 23. If the funicular is out of service or the wait is long, take tram 22 or 23 to Pohořelec and approach Petřín by a gentler route. Nebozízek station is a stop only on the uphill journey. The map above shows the Petřín area; check the maps on each place card for locations along the descent. Check actual service with PID or DPP on the day.

Time

Allow 4–5 hours if you include Petřín, or 3 hours for Malá Strana and Kampa only.

Cost

The park and riverbank are free. According to PID information dated October 4, 2026, a single funicular ride costs 100 CZK or 90 CZK in the PID Lítačka app. Valid Prague 24-hour or 72-hour passes and long-term passes include the ride at no extra cost, but not all regular short-term tickets are accepted. The lookout facilities and exhibitions cost extra.

Safety

Stone steps and slopes can be slippery after rain or snow, so slow down on the way down.

If plans change

If the funicular is out of service that day or the wait is long

Take tram 22 or 23 uphill to Pohořelec, then walk down starting near Strahov and the edge of Petřín, or skip the hill and focus on the flat areas of Kampa and Malá Strana.

If rain makes the slopes slippery

Skip the gardens and hillside paths and use paved routes through Malostranské náměstí, Kampa, and Legions’ Bridge.

Small tip

Rather than rushing to reach the Petřín Lookout Tower, shift your time to the gardens and Kampa if the weather is overcast.

Final check before departure

  • Check same-day service, wait times, and ticket conditions for the Petřín funicular with PID or DPP. If using it, board at Újezd and get off at Petřín to start your walk. If it is out of service, take a tram to Pohořelec to reach a higher point, or skip the hill and walk around Kampa only.
  • Consider the weather and opening hours before visiting the lookout tower: if it is foggy or windy, skip the paid viewpoint and spend that time in the gardens and Malá Strana.
  • Wear shoes suitable for downhill walking and allow for daylight: avoid wet slopes and stone steps, and reach Kampa or Malostranské náměstí before dark.
  • Cross Charles Bridge only if it fits your next leg: cross east if your accommodation is in the Old Town; if you are staying in Malá Strana, take a nearby tram from Kampa.
  • If you have booked a paid interior visit or tour, calculate your arrival time to include funicular waits and the tram or walking alternative if service is suspended. If the hill is difficult for you, skip Petřín and walk only the lower areas of Malá Strana and Kampa.

DPP announced that the Petřín funicular resumed passenger-carrying test operation on September 22, 2026. PID’s October 4, 2026 information lists daily service from 07:00 to 22:15. Nebozízek station is a stop only when going uphill from Újezd to Petřín. Recheck service, wait times, and ticket eligibility on the day.
