How to fit it in

Leave Lucerne in the morning, take in the snowy mountain views, glacier cave, and Cliff Walk, and return before evening. Don’t buy a ticket in advance if the summit webcam shows clouds or strong winds have closed the upper facilities.

Reality check

Transport

With an active Eurail travel day, regular trains between Luzern and Engelberg are covered with no extra fare. The Engelberg–TITLIS mountain transport is eligible for a 25% Eurail discount, but requires a separate ticket.

Time

Allow 8–10 hours for the round trip from Lucerne. Spend 2–3 hours at the summit and use the rest for transfers, waiting, and getting to and from Engelberg.

Cost

For adults in 2026, the cable car round trip costs CHF 102, or CHF 76.50 after the 25% Eurail discount. The CHF 12 Ice Flyer has no Eurail discount, bringing the total to CHF 88.50 if you choose it. Meals, insurance, and other activities cost extra.

Safety

The summit can have snow and below-freezing temperatures even in midsummer. If you develop a headache, dizziness, or shortness of breath, descend to a lower elevation right away. Wear closed-toe, non-slip shoes and bring warm, waterproof outerwear.

If plans change

Alternatives when the summit is clouded over

Check the webcam before buying a ticket for the upper section. If visibility remains poor, switch to lower elevations in Engelberg or Trübsee, or visit Lucerne instead.

When the Ice Flyer is stopped

Visit only Glacier Cave and Cliff Walk, and shorten your stay. The Ice Flyer is optional, so decide separately whether to take it and whether to make the round trip to the summit.

During Rotair maintenance

From August 17 to December 11, 2026, use TITLIS Connect as directed by on-site signs. Don’t plan your trip around riding Rotair.

Small tip

Eurail applies in two ways. Activate a travel day to ride the regular train, then show your pass to buy a separate round-trip ticket for the Engelberg–TITLIS section at 25% off.

Final check before departure

  • Check that your Eurail travel day is active and confirm your connection to Luzern–Engelberg.
  • Check the official TITLIS webcam and lift status.
  • Show your Eurail pass to buy the 25%-discounted mountain round-trip ticket.
  • Check official information to see whether expected crowd levels make a free boarding-time reservation necessary.
  • Save the last descent time from the summit on your phone.

TITLIS Rotair will be out of service for maintenance from August 17 to December 11, 2026. During this period, the summit will be reached via the new TITLIS Connect. Mountain transport and the Ice Flyer may stop due to weather or maintenance, so check operating hours and status on the day of your trip.
