At a glance

  • The flagship shop to visit in Central is at 35 Lyndhurst Terrace. The Hong Kong Tourism Board describes its egg tarts as shortcrust with a buttery flavor. If you’re expecting flaky, layered pastry, the texture will be different; think of it as a snack with egg custard in a cookie-like, crumbly crust. Not all Hong Kong egg tarts have the same kind of crust.
  • Instead of making a round trip from Central station just for the shop, include Lyndhurst Terrace on your walk after Tai Kwun or Soho, then continue downhill to Central Market. In the afternoon, the Mid-Levels Escalator runs uphill, so you can’t use it to travel down from Tai Kwun. Save the shop address and a walking route with sidewalks and stairs, and leave large bags at your hotel.
  • Start with an amount you can eat that day, such as one or two tarts per person, so you don’t have to carry them around all day. Fresh-from-the-oven tarts aren’t guaranteed to be available, so ask the staff if you want one warm. Decide whether to buy based on the line and what’s on display. If you have a timed reservation afterward, first work out how long you can wait.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Before your visit

Check the Central side-street route and the shop’s hours, then decide how many you’ll eat that day so you don’t need to make a separate round trip.

At the shop

If the tarts are fresh from the oven, don’t bite into one right away. If the line is long or they’re sold out, don’t go searching for another bakery.

Afterward

Continue your walk toward Tai Kwun or the Mid-Levels Escalator, and cut back on dessert at your next café by the number of tarts you ate.

How to fit it in as a quick snack

Ordering: check the price and location

The Hong Kong Tourism Board’s official information confirms the flagship address and signature tart type, but it doesn’t confirm current prices per tart or opening hours. Compare individual and box prices on the shop menu, and check the pack size and payment methods. Other locations may have different hours and availability, so if the Central flagship is your destination, go to the exact address.

Handling hot filling and packaging

Allow about 15–25 minutes to buy, cool, and eat the tarts, then factor in the actual line separately. The custard may be hotter than the crust, so don’t take a big bite right away. Eat somewhere that doesn’t block the entrance or narrow sidewalk, and don’t squash the box under other things in your bag. If they’re sold out, it’s simpler to get dessert at your next café than to travel to another neighborhood for tarts. Check for egg, dairy, and wheat allergies before buying.

How to fit it in

Fit it into your route through the side streets as you come downhill from Tai Kwun or before taking the Mid-Levels Escalator. Rather than carry a box up the hills, buy one or two and eat them right away somewhere nearby that won’t block foot traffic. They’ll taste better, too.

Reality check

Transport

Stop at the same elevation on a day when you’re walking from Central station toward the escalator and Tai Kwun area. Don’t go down to the bottom of the hill and climb back up just for a tart.

Time

Allow 15–25 minutes to buy, cool, and eat the tarts, and cap the wait at 15 minutes. If you have a timed reservation afterward, eat just one on the spot instead of rushing with a box.

Cost

Check the price per tart and box sizes, and choose the quantity based on how much you’ll eat that day rather than whether your hotel has a fridge. Skip a drink if you’re planning to stop at another café.

Safety

The filling of a fresh tart is hot, and the sidewalk is narrow. Don’t block the shop entrance.

If plans change

Tai Cheong Bakery egg tarts: if sold out

Skip the round trip to another bakery and get dessert at your next café instead.

Small tip

The custard in a fresh tart is hotter than the crust, so break it in half first to let the steam out. The crust can crumble easily from moisture or bumps, so buy only what you’ll eat that day and don’t put the box at the bottom of your bag.

Final check before departure

  • Place the shop along your walking route between Tai Kwun and the escalator.
  • Decide how many individual tarts you’ll eat that day.
  • Check for egg, dairy, and wheat allergies.

Check the shop’s notice on the day for sold-out items and location-specific hours.
