Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Check the Wellington Street location and whether Tai Kwun or Soho is your next stop. Decide how many toppings—wontons, fish balls, or beef—you want.
Order a regular bowl first. If the lunch wait is long, switch to a cha chaan teng or another noodle shop on the same street.
To avoid going up and down Central's hills again, head in one direction only: Tai Kwun or Sheung Wan.
Places and meals
A quick meal in Central before heading out for more sightseeing.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
After visiting Tai Kwun, head downhill to Wellington Street for a meal, or ride the Mid-Levels Escalator up to Soho afterward. Use the hills to shape your route. If the lunchtime queue of Central office workers is long, continue with your neighborhood plans first.
Reality check
The destination is Tsim Chai Kee at 98 Wellington Street, Central. Allow 15–20 minutes from Central Station, including the uphill walk and crossings. After your meal, choose one direction: Soho or Sheung Wan. Check the escalator's direction on site, as it varies by time of day.
Allow 25–35 minutes to eat and 20–30 minutes for a possible wait; these are planning estimates, not a guarantee of the actual wait. If you have a timed entry for Tai Kwun, eat after your visit. Before joining the queue, decide when you need to leave the restaurant. Don't assume that only part of your group can queue or hold a table; follow the staff's instructions.
Prices rise as you add toppings such as wontons, fish balls, and beef, so compare single-topping and mixed bowls on the menu. If you want to leave room in your Central dessert budget, order just a regular bowl.
The wontons contain shrimp and pork, and the fish balls are made with fish. Check before ordering if you have a shellfish or fish allergy, or dietary restrictions on meat. If you can't communicate your needs, choose another meal. Don't put large bags between the narrow seats or near the hot broth.
If plans change
Switch to a noodle shop or cha chaan teng in the same Wellington Street area.
Small tip
If it's your first time, start with shrimp wontons and add fish balls or beef depending on how hungry you are. Choosing all three toppings takes away the appeal of a simple bowl, so stick to the regular size if you have egg tarts or a café planned afterward.
Final check before departure
- Save the route from Central Station to Wellington Street, noting its slopes, and the direction of your next stop.
- Decide on wontons, fish balls, or beef, and set a price limit.
- If a Tai Kwun reservation overlaps with the lunch rush, change the order of your plans.
