At a glance

  • Unlike your accommodation’s bathroom, a sento is a public bath shared with other people. Rules for tattoos and children, as well as hours, last entry, towel sales, and payment methods, vary by facility. If you’re going at night, check the last entry time, not just when the doors close.
  • Store your shoes and get undressed, then wash your body before entering the bath. Keep your towel out of the bathwater. Soak briefly, then drink water and rest. If it’s your first visit, allow 60–90 minutes for washing and drying your hair, too.
  • At most sento, you bathe without a swimsuit. Don’t use a hot bath just after drinking or if you have a fever or feel dizzy.
  • If shared bathing makes you uncomfortable or you don’t meet the entry requirements, consider your room’s bathroom, a reservable private bath, or a foot bath.

How to fit it in

At the entrance, first check how to use the shoe locker and changing-room keys. Put away your clothes, wash your body, then ease into the bath. Keep your small towel outside the bath. Afterward, drink water and make sure you’re not dizzy before you leave.

Reality check

Transport

You’ll be warm after bathing, so a sento within walking distance of your accommodation or one you can return from without transfers is more convenient than a distant facility with multiple transfers.

Time

For a sento near your accommodation, allow about 15 minutes for check-in and changing, 40–60 minutes for washing and bathing, and 20 minutes to dry your hair and rest. Arriving just before last entry can make you feel rushed, so aim to enter at least 90 minutes before closing. Don’t travel to a faraway area afterward; leave only a meal or the trip back to your accommodation on your schedule.

Cost

First check whether towels, soap, and shampoo are included in the admission fee. If the total cost of rentals, drinks, and round-trip transportation is close to the price of a private bath at your accommodation, choose based on privacy and convenience getting back. Check accepted payment methods before you go, too.

Safety

For safety, don’t move quickly between hot and cold baths. If you have a fever, feel dizzy, or are short of breath, get out right away, sit down, rest, and tell a staff member. If shared bathing makes you uncomfortable or you don’t meet the requirements, consider your room’s bathroom, a private bath, or a foot bath. Cool down fully before heading outside.

If plans change

If you don’t meet the entry requirements

If the sento is temporarily closed, last entry has passed, or its tattoo or child policies don’t work for you, don’t chase another facility in a different neighborhood. Switch to your accommodation’s bathroom or a reservable private bath.

If you’re feeling unwell

If you’re feeling unwell or shared bathing feels like too much, skip the sento and rest in your room’s bathroom.

Small tip

Don’t decide what to bring based only on the admission fee. Check whether a small towel, bath towel, soap, and shampoo are included, and whether the facility accepts cash only. At most facilities, you bathe without a swimsuit. Avoid hot baths just after drinking or when you’re feeling unwell.

Final check before departure

  • Before you leave, check the official operating and booking information for your first Tokyo sento visit

Official information was checked on 2026-07-29. At most facilities, you bathe without a swimsuit, and you should avoid hot baths just after drinking or when you’re feeling unwell. On the day of your visit, check your chosen sento’s official information again for hours, last entry, tattoo and child policies, towel sales, and payment methods. Temporary closure notices posted by the facility and on-site guidance take priority over search results that say it’s open.
