At a glance

  • Shops in Shimokitazawa are spread out, and their days off vary. Pick one goal—vintage clothing, records, or live music—and link only two or three places whose hours you’ve confirmed.
  • In Kichijoji, you can visit Inokashira Park and the shopping streets near the station. If you add a reservation-based attraction, set aside time separately for its entry time and your park walk.
  • Visiting both neighborhoods in one day means more train travel and shopping fatigue. Spend half a day in one, then stay near your hotel for the evening.
  • Be considerate of residents in residential lanes: watch your noise, photos, and trash. For small live music venues, check official information for ticket, drink order, age, and photography rules.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

If You Choose Shimokitazawa

Choose one goal—vintage clothing, records, or live music—and connect only two or three places whose hours you’ve confirmed.

If You Choose Kichijoji

Decide whether to spend more time walking in Inokashira Park or exploring the shopping streets near the station → After the park, plan a meal or rest near the station.

Wrapping Up the Day

If you include both neighborhoods, you’ll spend more time traveling than shopping. Finish in one area and return to your hotel, or visit the other neighborhood another day.

How to fit it in

Choose Shimokitazawa if it’s rainy or you’re focused on shopping or live music. Choose Kichijoji in good weather if you want to mix a park, a meal, and shopping streets. Without a reservation-based attraction, 4–5 hours in either neighborhood is enough for an afternoon.

Reality check

Transport

Shimokitazawa is on private railway lines toward Shinjuku and Shibuya, while Kichijoji is on JR and private railway lines. Compare the number of transfers from your hotel and your last connection back to it, and avoid traveling back and forth between both rail corridors in one day.

Time

Allow 4–5 hours for each neighborhood, or 6–7 hours if you add a reserved exhibit or live performance. Factor in waits at small shops and time to relax in the park; don’t add another major area to the same day.

Cost

Keep transportation, meals, and cafés separate from shopping or live music in your budget. For secondhand goods, check condition, exchanges, tax-free shopping, and import rules. For live music, check whether a drink order or fees are required in addition to the ticket.

Safety

Watch your step around the park at dusk and for bicycles and cars in narrow lanes. Check before taking photos inside shops or recording performances, and don’t wait in lines in front of homes.

If plans change

A Rainy Day in Kichijoji

Spend less time in the park and visit the shopping streets and one officially operated indoor attraction. If there’s heavy rain, switch to an area closer to your hotel.

If Your Target Shops Are Closed in a Row

Don’t search randomly for other lanes. Scale back to public shopping facilities and one café, or save Inokashira Park in Kichijoji for another day.

Small tip

Don’t venture deeper into private residential lanes just because an area is described as “local.” You can get a good feel for the neighborhood while staying in public shopping streets, parks, and live music venues.

Final check before departure

  • Choose your focus: vintage shops and live music, or a park and everyday shopping streets.
  • Check official hours for shops, performances, and reservation-based attractions.
  • Save your routes from and back to your hotel and a station where you can end the night early.

Small shops, live music, and park events change often. Check official shop, venue, and Tokyo tourism information on the day of your visit, and be considerate of residents. Keep both costs and nighttime safety in mind. If a show is sold out, scale back to a walk through the public shopping streets.
